Boy, 3, kills himself with gun found in family's car

This man violated Washington state firearms law RCW 9.41.050 and a child is dead because of it:

RCW 9.41.050
Carrying firearms.
(2)(a) A person shall not carry or place a loaded pistol in any vehicle unless the person has a license to carry a concealed pistol and: (i) The pistol is on the licensee's person, (ii) the licensee is within the vehicle at all times that the pistol is there, or (iii) the licensee is away from the vehicle and the pistol is locked within the vehicle and concealed from view from outside the vehicle.

Under the exact same circumstances, another child dies:

Girl, 7, accidentally shot by brother in police officer's van
Officer suspended over daughter's shooting death

This man, however, did not violate RCW 9.41.050 because he was exempt due to RCW 9.41.060:

RCW 9.41.060
Exceptions to restrictions on carrying firearms.
The provisions of RCW 9.41.050 shall not apply to:
(1) Marshals, sheriffs, prison or jail wardens or their deputies, correctional personnel and community corrections officers as long as they are employed as such who have completed government-sponsored law enforcement firearms training and have been subject to a check through the national instant criminal background check system or an equivalent background check within the past five years, or other law enforcement officers of this state or another state. Correctional personnel and community corrections officers seeking the waiver provided for by this section are required to pay for any background check that is needed in order to exercise the waiver;

It's going to be interesting to see who gets prosecuted for what. Who will Child Protective Services go after and who they won't. What do you think? Should police officer's be subject to the same laws that us Joe Citizen's are regarding firearms possession and carrying? I 100% think so.

Yes. Regardless who you are it's your responsibility to secure your guns when not on you. It really doesn't take much effort to keep the kids safe. Theives on the other hand........

Here's another thing to consider.... the officer cannot be prosecuted under RCW 9.41.050 because they have "completed government-sponsored law enforcement firearms training". Yet the person with no training violates the law. Really? We pay the government to train these people so they can be exempt from the laws us Joe Citizens must comply with so that when their negligence causes a death that can't be prosecuted because the law does not apply to them?

Yes, I think that all law enforcement officers (& politicians) should be subjected to the exact same laws & punishments as we the people/sheeple are subjected to.
Just because this moron has a badge should not make him 'above the law'.
I truly feel very badly for him and his family, but he really fk'd up big time and a child is dead because of it.

Why were the kids in the car to begin with, pretty sure that's not company procedure, and if so why didn't he secure the firearms this time around to ensure that his kids were safe... I feel for him and his family. I don't think he will be prosecuted under those RCW's but he will get prosecuted for allowing and placing his children in harms way and knowingly placing them in danger where they could access firearms. WIll be interesting to see what happens.

While I feel the officer has a higher level of training and a role to lead society in safe firearm handling, he should be punished worse for being even more negligent with his responsibilies. But, because I do not believe in double standards, they should both be punished equally, whatever the punishment be.

Both parents are guilty of egregious stupidity, and it's a shame that the children had to pay for their parents stupidity.

And here's a good one....

I hope mom and boyfriend enjoy the races....

PORT ORCHARD, Wash. –The attorney for the 9-year-old boy who took a loaded gun to school that critically injured a classmate says the boy admits to amended charges in a deal with the prosecutor:

He will testify against his own mother - Jamie Lee Passmore - and her boyfriend Douglas Bauer, now accused of allowing him to have access to the gun during a weekend visit.

The couple is currently in Nevada at a NASCAR event.

The boy will be under department supervision for a year and have to go through 48 hours of counseling. He's not allowed to have contact with his mother or her boyfriend, who police plan to arrest when they return home from their NASCAR trip later this month.

I wonder if the parents of the two more recent shootings will be charged the same? Should it matter if your kid shoots his sister or himself with the gun you failed to control?
