Twice he shoots himself??

I get in a dander when I read about people shooting themselves, or others... when supposedly "cleaning a gun". I can't for the life of me understand where anyone is learning to clean a gun while it is loaded. I can't understand how it is possible to properly clean a gun while it is loaded. Ok, so it's bull****, they lie to cover up an NG.

Now, here is a guy, well known even, that shoots himself not once but twice! Some people, IMO, should be prohibited from ever owning a weapon after the first time.

Curious...do you side with Evans in gun ownership?

There was a Sheriff near Eugene OR that shot himself twice at The Barons Den gun range. They left the holes in the ground as an example for other customers to not be idiots.

No, read the article, he shot himself a few years ago while carrying in his waistband inside of a nightclub. And no, I don't side with any anti. I just think some people are to stupid to be messing with guns. He is one.

Howdy,

My brother's FIL was the Chief Reserve Deputy in the county that he lives in and was the dept safety officer. On Thanksgiven Day 2007 Glenn shoot himself with his dept. issued Glock 22 while trying to clean it.

His son showed up for dinner high on crack and meth, made a big sence, got I to a fight with everyone there and my brother ended making him leave.

Afterwards, Glenn was very upset after everything that happened so he went to his office to relax. He decided to clean he service pistol and while attempting to remove the slide from his Glock he shot himself through the left hand.

Since then he has had over a dozen surgeries to repair the damage and for the first 6 month or so they thought that he was going to loose his hand.

On a different note about 3 years ago the same son stole his Dept. issued Glock and traded if for $50.00 worth of crack.

That was Plaxico Burress mentioned in your link, not Riggs. There was one ND and two injuries incurred from it in Riggs' situation.

Since you had a negligent reading/citation of the article, are you too stupid to make posts on the internet, or too stupid to own a computer? (It's an analogy - I am not calling you stupid, but I am saying the idea expressed below is stupid.)

And no, I don't side with any anti. I just think some people are to stupid to be messing with guns. He is one.

While I certainly think shooting one's self is mock-worthy some, maybe even most, of the time, someone putting themselves above the phrase, "...shall not be infringed" and determining who should or shouldn't be allowed to own a gun is indeed an anti position.

What ever happened to following the 4 general rules of firearms safety . I have never read about a ND when someone followed them! Some times we need to have examples of stupidity to reaffirm them.

How do you clean a firearm if it's never unloaded?

Its impossible to clean a firearm safely, unless you know and verify its an unloaded firearm. If a firearm is unloaded, and pointed in a safe direction, you can then pull the trigger to release the slide (if that's how your firearm works).

Therefore, there are only three rules.

Keep your finger off the trigger until your ready to fire.

Know your target and what's in front and behind.

Do not point your weapon at anything you don't want to destroy.

Any one of these can be broken alone and the effects are minimally dangerous...both the people mentioned in the article broke all the rules.

Ah, yes, it was Plaxico Burress mentioned as one of the of shooters. I should always remember to finish my coffee in the morning before reading articles. <grin>
Some of us do make 'stupid' mistakes. I guess not all of us Blues?

Why are you trying to make it about me instead of your anti-gun position stating that you are qualified to determine who is too stupid, and who ain't, to own a gun?

I haven't made any mistakes in this thread, stupid or otherwise. It's your thread. Seems you ought to be able to stay on-topic.

When the firearm is taken apart it is no longer a firearm and can be cleaned. The only time I'm taking a look down into the barrel is after it is removed because it is no longer a firearm and there is no chance of a projectile coming out of it and killing me. When I was looking for my pistol I ruled out the models that required you to pull the trigger before you could disassemble the gun. I consider that bad engineering and I don't want a firearm that isn't designed well. That's just my preference others may not mind pulling the trigger but I err on the side of safety. Even still if you follow all the other rules nobody gets hurt even if you have to pull the trigger to disassemble the weapon. Just make sure it is not pointed at something you dont want destroyed and then pull the trigger. Treat it as if it's loaded and it will go bang instead of pointing it at the cat before you clean it.

It is complete negligence. When I clean a gun there is no ammo anywhere near that gun. I double check to make sure the mag is empty and nothing in the chamber. The people who have these shootings happen are simply cowboys who think they know everything so well that nothing will happen. Maybe even sipping a beer while cleaning it. Hope it doesn't take killing someone for these people to learn.

I learned a long time ago, that referring to people in a negative manner because they make a mistake (just like most of us do some on a daily basis) just seems a little too judgmental.
~
I am far from perfect and gladly admit to that fact and because of that fact I am a little OCD when I comes to cleaning my weapons whether it be the safety involved with the weapon or the cleaning of the weapon.
~
So I hope the individual has learned something from his experience and he doesn't have to repeat the process.

My pappy always told me that smart people can learn from their mistakes and wise people can learn from other's mistakes. I hope I am wise enough to not have to make this mistake for myself. HEHE. :dance3:

Don't complain. He was just emptying his gun for cleaning. You do it your way, he does it his way!:to_pick_ones_nose3:
