Tried Open Carry for the first time.... didn't make it too far...

So the other day when I was going for a walk with my kids I figured I would open carry. I only made it about three houses down the block before I pulled my shirt down over my gun. After discussing it will people on facebook and reading some of the posts here i think I'll give it another try, but it'll take some getting used to, that's for sure!!

Treat it like anything else on your belt. Only go for it when you need to. Honestly though dont think about it. Put it on, make sure it secure, comfortable and at an angle where it would be hard for someone to grab it without your knowledge (feeling a yank up is too late).

Do expect looks. It will happen. Dont dwell on the fact that its there. Strap it on and in some respects forget about it.

OC can be done you just have to overcome your own fear.

I agree with covering it up and this is why. I live in a city of 25k, so for me, believing that there will not be any anxious, uninformed citizen that will call th police is too much for me to handle. I am a graduate of the Ohio Peace Officers Traning Academy and do not feel like telling an uninformed citizen or officer the law. For me CC is the way to go, no one knows and evl doers have no idea until they are face to face with a Glock. I carry a Glock 19 IWB and A S&W bodyguard in a Blackhawk ankle holster.

It can be intimidating the first time I remember me and my cousin walking down the street and a Leo drove by my blood started pumping he motioned for me to come over I walked over he asked if I knew where an address was I told him he thanked me and drove away lol I now cc but still oc on occasion

Legal or not I do not favor open carry, at least for me. To me open carry is like playing poker with all cards dealt face up. The more unassuming and in the background I can be the more I like it. If the time comes, again, that someone needs to see that I have a weapon it will be when they are looking down the barrel with that dumb "What happened?" look on their face. But that is just my opinion, of course.

Even though in Minnesota, I can legally carry open, I choose to carry concealed. I know I have a right to display my weapon, I don't want to deal with the anti-gun people or a misinformed cop. Carrying concealed will not prevent me from accessing my Springfield-Armory ESP quickly and efficiently in case I need to. I'm not carrying this weapon to impress or scare folks; I'm carrying it to protect my children, family and self. To each his/her own on this matter.

I live in michigan, I have had my cpl for roughly 5 years and it wasn't until recently I started oc. I have been doing it for about a month now with the exception of when I feel its necessary to conceal it but surprisingly enough I have not had any negative encounters, knock on wood granted I get the funny look from some people and others stick their nose in the air and turn away from me but its not about how people look at me or act it is all about my peace of mind knowing that myself and my family are protected.

I tried to OC one time in North Carolina where I was visiting, didn't like it. I prefer to carry concealed, making it nobody's business but my own.

I just love how so many people can't resist coming to the OPEN CARRY forum and tells us all the reasons they have for not carrying openly. If someone is looking for reasons not open carry, maybe that should be discussed in the concealed carry forum? I don't see too many of us who open carry going to the concealed carry section and telling all the concealed carry people why we open carry and why they should not hide their gun.

Same exact reasons, even the poker card game reason came back, I still don't know if I'm going to respond to each of the fear mongering posts...hmmmm.....

For now, I open carry here in Washington. Nuff said.

Maybe the thread should have ran something like.
When I first started OC this is how I did it.....
This would be helpful to the person who stated they tried it.

Another example; I have seen people wanting to reload for self-protection ammo and 10 posts saying I would not do it, legal issues and NOT giving any case law. For crying out loud, the person just wanted some reloading data.

And in this case, a person was just stating how they felt when they OC.

Understood and I know this is not a reloading thread so I will make it brief.
Who has the popcorn supply today? LOL

Why did you cover up? Did you feel like everybody was looking at you? Were you afraid somebody might think you were trying to be a cowboy? How well do you know your neighbors? Is your neighborhood more on the mellow side, or rough side? Do you like your gun? Do you like your holster? Maybe start out wearing a more concealing holster like a DeSantis thumb break which is a bit more concealing, as opposed to a more revealing holster like a paddle holster. Just a thought.

If it is legal in your state, I'd say go for it...

For years (in uniform) I open carried...Then when I went into narcotics I went concealed...It took me some time to get used to carrying concealed...It is just what you get used to... I have to say the open carry has advantages in speed when the weapon is needed.

And you won't, either. It is strange how those who are ardent CC'ers tend to side with the anti's against OC'ers. One would think those of us who carry, regardless of how we carry, would feel we're all in the same boat with this. I do both, though I OC almost always and I have what I believe to be very good reasons for this. I would never dream of chastising a CC'er as some of them do to OC'ers. I support both modes of carry and would hope everyone else who carries would do the same.

To me, carrying concealed and living in an Open Carry state is the best of both worlds. If someone sees your concealed pistol it doesn't matter. It's legal. 😜

I completely agree.

There are a lot of CC'ers who support OC'ing even if they do not do it themselves, there are a lot of OC'ers who support CC'ing and most likely also do it themselves as well. It would be great if it was just like that...but alas it is not. There are a lot of CC'ers who are against OC, and lead the anti-gunners into trying to abolish the 2A. I have yet to come by any OC who is against CC.

And OK I give in, here are my responses:

I open carry. I'm not carrying this weapon to impress or scare folk either; unless of course they are a would be criminal, and then I hope I scare them enough to leave me alone, if you are not a criminal, there is nothing to be scared of. I'm carrying to protect my family, and myself, as well.

I don't carry a weapon so I can be judge jury and executioner.

You know someone else brought this up before. I must say, it is a great analogy. So here is the deal, it is like playing poker, it's always "all in with everything you own," with cards dealt face up, and I have 4 Aces King high every single time. It's not the greatest hand in poker, but a really good one, would you want to pick me to play poker with? I do not like to play my poker face and gamble with my life. I'd rather completely avoid seeing their "What happened?" face, because I will be deterring them way before I get to see it.

I live in a city of roughly 200k people, I have not had a single police officer come up to me, but I do not know if someone called them. If they did, they were probably set straight as to what the Constitution of the United States says. For me OC is the way to go, because I will avoid having to stick my Jericho in someone's face due to deterrence. Seeing as how many more CC have to stick their firearm in someone's face compared to OC'ers, I do not see any reason to make me more of a target by hiding my firearm.

I'm sorry I posted without your permission in "your" forum. My post was polite and only applied to me. I opened carried for years earlier in my life. I am not against open carry for you.

Just for the record I do not favor banning open carry. As a patron member of the NRA, supporter of the NRA ILA and a lifetime supporter of the the 2nd amendment I have the street cred to state my opinion of what is best for me without worrying that I may be giving ammo to the wacky left that is trying to take mine (and your) rights away. We ARE all at least Life Members of the NRA around here, right?
