Traveling to Maine

This summer my wife and I are going to Maine to spend time with friends there. We will have to drive through NY. I have looked online and from what I see, NY will NOT allow anyone transport a handgun through the state. This is against Federal Law but since when has lib-o-rats ever let laws that they do not like stop their agenda.

So I am asking all on this site what you would do. While Federal Law SHOULD trump NY Law. I really do not have the time or funds to fight such a lib-o-rat state and still lose my gun! On another thread I saw where a guy just driving through MD got the gestapo treatment and did not even have a handgun in his car!!!

when my father goes to Maine he takes a single shot 12 gage taken down to get through MA, but if you obey the laws and stash it in trunk un loaded you should be fine

google Firearm Owners Protection Act and follow the laws in that act and you should have no problems

Have you tried to read it?
Telling him to read it does not give him much help!

Really?!?

18 U.S. Code § 926A - Interstate transportation of firearms | LII / Legal Information Institute

18 U.S. Code § 926A - Interstate transportation of firearms

Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver’s compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.

Granted, there are no pictures. I just don't see how unload the gun and lock the gun and ammo in the trunk or a case is all that hard. Do you really need a photo explanation?

Drive decent, don't do anything to attract abnormal attention from police, and keep your mouth shut about your guns if you do happen to be stopped for speeding. Millions of people make it through NY, NJ and MD everyday with no police interaction at all.

vernsimpson,
Send your gun to your friend by UPS next day, it will be waiting for you. Make sure you insure it and let your friends know it's coming.

and as soon as you declare the firearm to UPS in writing as required by Federal law they will refuse to ship it because it is against their written terms and conditions to ship a firearm from a non-FFL to anyone other than an FFL.

Maybe vernsimpson should just not go on the trip. He has a much greater chance of getting killed in an auto accident on the way then having an issue with an unloaded firearm locked in the trunk or a case. Seriously - the number of vehicle accidents every day has to be many, many, many times greater than the number of firearms charges that arise from simple traffic stops in these states.

Unloaded in a lock box in the trunk, Obey the speed limit, and make sure you have enough fuel so you don't have to get off the highway

I presume you have a a Maine CC permit?

No, I only have a resident MN and a FL CC. I did not plan on carrying but would like to have it with me when I spent the night.

I will most likely leave it with a friend before I hit PA. Then pick it up on my way home. While the chances that I would have a problem are very low, all it would take is one Barney Fife to ruin my day and trip!!!

I don't like that option but I do not have the time, energy and/or the funds to fight the anti's and still lose. I do not trust our liberal courts nor the LEOs in those NE Lib states.

Just make sure when you leave it with the friend in a different state that it is in a locked container that they can't open or else you will be violating federal laws.

Personally, I would either take the gun all the way with me, or not take it at all.
