Traveling through reservations

Does anyone know the rules for having a handgun, either concealed or locked in the trunk, while traveling through an Indian Reservation. I'll be going to Yellowstone next week and will likely go through a couple in Nebraska and South Dakota.

Depends entirely upon state law and the rules of the Indian reservation. If you are a non-Indian, the tribal laws of the Indian reservation are treated exactly the same as rules of a property owner. They can enforce their tribal laws by asking you to leave the reservation, and you will be trespassing if you don't leave, but they can't arrest you or physically detain you unless you are also violating a state law. Safest answer is lock the unloaded gun in the trunk of your vehicle, or in a locked case, with the ammunition locked up as well and never consent to any search of the locked compartment/container where the gun and ammo are unless you really want to research the state law and tribal law of the each state/reservation you will be travelling through.

It would be best to call the Tribal police and check with them. They may have additional laws over the states. And, they do have the right to enforce them.
