Traveling through Illinois

Need some help on understanding the laws for Illinois. I live in MS and have a carry permit. I travel, by car, 9 states including Illinois. All the other states are reproprocity states except Illinois. I have heard (read somewhere and now can’t find) that as long as I have a carry permit I can have my firearm in my vehicle, not on my person and can take it out of my vehicle and into the hotels in the evening.
Is this correct and when it is in my vehicle can it be loaded and in my center console?
Can it be I’m my center console but need to be unloaded?
Does it have to be locked up somewhere? Does it have to be unloaded when locked up?
I need some accurate info so I don’t end up in jail just trying to protect myself on the road.

I recently traveled through Illinois as well. My understanding of their law is that you can have it on your person while in the vehicle, however of you leave the vehicle it must be secured and cannot leave the vehicle. As far as the hotel is concerned, I would simply unload it, place in a case until you are in your room a which time you can ready it for defense.

Read 430 ILCS 66, Section 40 ( e ).

So as described in the statute linked above, you can conceal a handgun in the car while in Illinois if you are allowed to do so in your home state. It can be on your person, loaded in the center console, etc.

If there is any doubt on this, there are numerous admissions (by the attorney general's deputies) in court and in the record of the original deliberations in the legislature that support this interpretation.

As for transporting your handgun into a hotel, you will need to unload it first and carry it in a case to do so. The criminal code allows this: see 720 ILCS 5 / 24-1 ( a ) ( 4 ) ( 3 ):

That paragraph mentions the FOID card requirement, but note that nonresidents are exempt from that in the FOID act; see 430 ILCS 65, Sec. 2 ( b ) ( 9 ) and ( 10 ).
