transporting long guns in a truck

Just curious if there are any laws concerning how rifles or shotguns should be transported in a vehicle. I have a Tacoma so the back seat is really the only option.

There is no restriction as to how you may carry/transport a long gun in South Carolina, except of course you can't take the gun into/onto prohibited places such as school grounds. It's common around here to have a loaded rifle propped up in the front passenger footwell/seat area just in case "sumthin needs shootin'". Even in bigger towns this doesn't seem to be a problem. I saw a Remington 700 in the back seat of a Kia in downtown (5-Points) Columbia not too long ago. Chaos did not ensue.
.
That being said, don't be surprised if some rookie cop or some know-it-all statist (you know the type, some of them post here) tells you you're in violation of some law they made up to keep the world safe. Personally, most of the time I transport mine cased and unloaded on the back seat with the exception of my "go to" SKS whichs stays loaded, on the floor, covered with a blanket in the back seat of my truck. In 15 years living in SC I have never had a problem, not even the 3 times I've been stopped for speeding. Your results may vary, but probably not. Let the hand-wringers comment!

I believe this to be covered under preemption, however, Greenville Municode says:

"Sec. 24-264. - Possession of loaded rifle or shotgun on public property.
It shall be unlawful for any person to have any rifle or shotgun in his possession while on or in any public street, alley or other way or any other public property unless the rifle or shotgun is unloaded, broken down and separated; provided, however, this section shall not apply to duly authorized law enforcement officers or members of the active armed forces of the United States, including the reserve and the National Guard."

I believe this to be unenforceable, however, IANAL so your mileage may vary.

in SC and have a taco...are you on any tacoma boards?
I use to get on Toyota Nation and Tacoma World all the time when I had my 06 TRD 4x4. Got rid of that and have since gotten an 07 2WD (don't judge me, it was an impulse buy and has been my least favorite vehicle ever, only because of lack of 4WD) and I'm not interested in dumping a ton of money into parts and mods on a truck that is practically useless lol. So not that much anymore. Usually just when I need service info. I'm working on getting rid of it and getting a 4 door JK though.

So here's a question then... if I have my CWP and I manage to get my Jeep like I am currently trying, can I have my rifles in the very back in the "luggage compartment" on Clemson's campus as long as they are in a "closed container secured by an integral fastener"?

Yes. Probably. According to the letter of the law you can. 16-23-420 doesn't specify what kind of firearm is allowed, only that they are allowed on campus when stored properly and you have a CWP. To the best of my knowledge no one has been arrested for doing this. Because of that we have no legal precedent for reference.
.
I guess my question is if you did (I have) have a long gun properly stowed while on school property, how is anyone going to know anyway? I believe in dangerous liberty and always make my decisions on that basis. That being said I'd rather just be able to fully and freely exercise my rights instead of trying to stay on the right side of some arbitrary, man made, ******** law.

Campus parking patrol and campus PD are pretty damn nosey. I've caught them peeking in cars on several occasions.

The point I was about to make is that 16-23-420 says the weapon must remain "inside an attended or locked motor vehicle" in addition to the language about the secured container.

So, if your jeep was one without doors that can be locked, some may suggest you were not in compliance with the code. Again, IANAL so your mileage may vary.

I'll be on the lookout for anyone messing with your threads and steer clear.

Embarked in an unnecessary argument with some other guy.

He asked an unnecessary question unrelated to the topic. I answered it.

Back to your topic here, see the above post. I was just pointing out there was additional language above the secured container.

I'm backing away slowly.

I wasn't saying that anything you said here was off topic. I just didn't want anymore fights to be picked this early on in the thread. It's one thing to do it in a thread that's drug on for a while and all questions have been answered.

But yes, most wranglers do have locking doors, and the new JK's even have keyless entry.
