Transferring handgun to friend from out of state

I was born and raised in San Diego until 2009 when I joined the Army and left CA. I left a handgun in the care of a good friend. He now wants to buy it from me. However, I now live in Colorado. Can I complete my portion of the forms through mail and send them to him to do his part? Or does transferring require both parties to be in person for some reason?

Also, if he decides he doesn't want it, can a friend mail my handgun to me? Is he able to send someone else's handgun through an FFL in San Diego to my FFL in Colorado?

When you left the handgun with the friend in California, you already transferred possession of it to him in violation of California law.
