Training Classes In Central New York??????

THis is my first post cause i am a little comfussed.
I live right outside of the city of Syracsue New York and jsut turned 21. I have my New York State securtiy gaurd licence and recently have seen some job posting for amred secuirty. It is my understranding that sence now i am 21 I can request a licence. I have read that i need a traing class or safty class im not sure if soemone could clear that up for me i would greatly apreashate that. Aslo when i apply for an aremd security gaurd job will it make it easier if i already have my pistol permit? Im jsut realyt confused about the whole process i mean i know i can have a pistol bucase i own several rifles please help and thank you.

You need a handgun safety class which is offered at Gander Mountain.The class is needed for a pistol permit in every upstate county of NY.The pistol may be carried for security purposes only.Go to your local sheriffs office to pickup a application.

The requirements for a ccw vary from county to county. Most require the NRA pistol course or something similar. Some accept a shorter course for your ccw license. One county requires no course. Some counties accept your DD214 if you've been in the military with varying time restrictions. e.g. Oneida county says you must have separated within 3 yrs to avoid taking a course. I suggest you call your local pistol license office, listed in the phone book or you can probably get the info from local police or county sheriff.

Security guard training requires a different course. I don't know how extensive it is, but about 3 days rings a bell.

Hi Brian,

In order to work in NYS as an "Armed Guard" you need to attend a 47 hr Armed Security Guard training course. If you do a google search for that in your local area a couple schools should come up. I think Verdad Security is still operating in the Syracuse area and they offer that course.

Once you attend that course, pass and are approved/issued a license by the state of NY then you will have a license to carry a firearm to perform your duties as an armed guard. It does not mean you can carry outside of that job description. You will need to go to your county office as prior posts recommend, attend an NRA basic pistol course and then apply for a pistol permit in your county of residence.
