Wow, you who must wait awhile before you receive your license are making me feel quite fortunate. I live in PA, a "shall issue" state. Last month, I went to the sheriff's office and gave them my LCTF application along with a $20.00 check. About 25 minutes later I left with my license in hand! Seemed way too easy, to me, so Sunday my wife and I are enrolled in a day-long NRA pistol class which includes three hours of range time. The beginning of a lifetime of learning but it should be fun!

I too live in PA... what is easy about going to your local County Sheriff, an elected government official, and giving him money to ask permission for a right that you are supposedly given (not given, inalienable) already and that is not to be infringed upon?

PA does NOT have it correct either.

With that said, I hope you and your wife have a great time enrolled in your pistol class. You two should enjoy it a lot.

Mine is taking so long cause so many people are getting theirs they got a pile of paperwork. When you come in and do the paperwork it gets thrown in at the bottom. It's taking them 2 weeks just to get threw all of them.

2 weeks? Rejoice. 90 days here in SC, and if you call them some time during that 90 days to check on it, they'll say "has it been 90 days since we received it?". If you say no, there reply will be "wait till the 90th day before calling us back".

Same here in Colorado... though I got mine in just over 2 months. They are trying, at least in most counties (good luck in Denver county!)... they're just really busy...

See that's what makes me mad about SC. Before the whole Obama epidemic, they were still dragging it out the whole 90 days. They take pretty much the full amount of time whether they're busy or not. And I doubt they're doing anymore thorough of a background check then what they do if you go to the gun shop and buy a gun. So if the gun shop can get it done in 5 minutes, why does it take another government agency 90 days?

My only guess is it's not the same background check. I don't know what else they do, but here you have to provide I think it was 10 years of past addresses (prior military so that's a lot for me!). I know from plenty of experience there are many different background check types, but I don't know what determines what kind or what you have to check.

No reason for them to take 90 days every time, though. That's ridiculous. Here they warned me it might take that long and not to worry if it did, just wait that long to call. I have a non-resident permit with Utah, and they sent it back pretty quickly along with a letter saying that I was granted the permit providing that my background check comes back clean. So they actually gave it to me before the background check finished!

I'll never fail to understand why the CHP doesn't allow us to buy guns without a background check, since obviously we have already passed a more stringent background check then the one required to buy a gun. And if we were to do something that disqualified us from owning guns, clearly our permit would have been taken away at that time.

A NICS check is not the same as a background check. Every state has circumstances that they will not issue a license. In TX, the FBI does our background checks. If you owe taxes, child support or have been (or are) involved with a restraining order involving domestic violence you can be denied. Some of those issues are not covered in a NICS check.

In SC an FFL doesn't have to do a background check if you have a CWP. I've bought 4 different guns in the last 2 months and they didn't do a background check on any of them. One store I bought from isn't supposed to let you buy more than one gun within 5 days of each other. But I guess they only keep paper records so they had know way of knowing.

Well this coming Monday will be 3 weeks. My wife went to the same place and got hers in 2. Rrrrrrr.
