To Register or Not to Register?

I've been out of the state of Utah for a few years and I'm a little rusty on the laws of registering your firearms. I've purchased a few rifles/pistols from gun stores so I know the govt. has me on the books for those. But what about guns that I've purchased from individuals. In Utah, we can buy and sell almost any weapon and unless you want, there's no need to do any paperwork for the sell. So, are we obligated to register firearms that we've purchased second hand?

On a second note, I've been pulled over several times while carrying and some LEO's don't even look at my gun (in the glove box or on my person) while others have removed them from my vehicle, unloaded them, conducted their business, and then returned it to me. If it was a gun that I had purchased 2nd hand and hadn't registered it in my name, is that going to be a problem? Is there a database that they can go into and attach my name to the serial number of the gun i.e. now the govt. knows what I have? Just wanted to know what you thought. Thanks for your time!

Well, I know that in Indiana there seems to be no laws against the private sale of firearms from one person to another, but you need to watch who you are selling to. If you sell to a felon, you are screwed. As far as a CCW gun that one has bought from another, I would just pay the fee to go to the police station in my area, and have the serial number and such transfered to my name so that there is no problems. JMHO.:biggrin:

Well, I know that in Indiana there seems to be no laws against the private sale of firearms from one person to another, but you need to watch who you are selling to. If you sell to a felon, you are screwed. When I sell, I at least verify driver's license and concealed permit if they have one. At this point, all the guns I've sold were a stash my dad had and they were all old Remington .30-06's, .22's, and shotguns. Nothing hi cap or assault rifles.

And my question about registering, maybe I'm just paranoid. I don't know what direction this country is going and there's always talk of more strict gun laws. Do I want a paper trail on every gun I own? Do I want the government to know I have "X" amount of guns in my home? Is it better they know about a few and the rest I keep "off the books?" I'm paranoid, aren't I?

Utah has no such thing as gun registration. There would be nobody to register them with, even if you wanted to.

You're not paranoid if they really are out to get you.:biggrin: And I would tend to not tell about ones from private sales unless forced to by whatever state you live in.

Thanks S&W645 and NavyLT. I did some research online about UT gun laws and there is no registration of any firearm required. So basically, I will buy 2nd hand guns from here on out and not worry. Thanks to those who responded to my post. Have a great week! :triniti:
