Timbuk2 Rump Roast Belt Pack for CC while cycling

I've been looking for a way to conceal carry while riding my [pedal] bike for a while now, and was about to commit to a traditional fanny pack or just stashing it in my Camelbak pack and not being able to get to it fast. Then I came across the Link Removed for about $29. I wanted something that doesn't scream "GUN", while at the same time seems like it will be very functional. I think any product that is made by Timbuk2 would blend right in with the cycling crowd since their expertise is making commuting/messenger bags. It is even a holster for a U-Lock for goodness sake. I just ordered it today, so I'll do a follow-up post with my review once it arrives and I can take it out on the road.

I carry a Ruger LC9, I primarily ride my road bike, and I wear the traditional road bike attire while cycling (club cut jersey's though, I'm a big dude). I think this "Rump Roast" will work well since it's dimensions will fit an LC9 perfectly, it's inconspicuous, and allows for easy access with the Velcro.

I plan to order a DeSantis Super Fly for my LC9 soon. Once I get this Rump Roast in hand I'll have a better idea if I'll need a pocket holster for it or not. I'll let you know if I do.

I figured since I've spent so much time looking for a good CC bicycling option, I better post it here now that I found something. FYI, for you bigger guys, I spoke with one of the Timbuk2 people, and it fits people with wastes up to 48" in size, but it didn't list that on the website.

I've thought about carrying in my Camelbak. I think the most likely scenario of me needing to get to the CCW would include me getting knocked off of the bike and on to the ground. This would result in me being separated from the bike (making gun storage options on the bike and off my person undesirable), and likely laying on the ground. If I'm on the ground this is going to make getting the Camelbak off so I can get to the gun that much more difficult. Keeping a backup gun in a Camelbak might be alright, but it's going to take a lot of time to get to a gun in the camelback compared to keeping a gun in a fanny pack like this, or in a jersey pocket.


On a somewhat unrelated note, I am also shopping for some pepper spray that can be Velcroed to the bike frame. This would be mostly for dogs, but potentially for 2 legged animals too. Any suggestions? Do any of the cyclists out there use pepper spray while riding?

I received the Rump Roast in the mail. I've yet to actually take it for a ride on the bike since it's been doing nothing but raining lately here in North Carolina. However, it seems pretty comfortable for just wearing it casually around the house. For scale, I put in my firearm, a Ruger LC9 to show how much space is in the Rump Roast. The gun is in a DeSantis SuperFly pocket holster. The Rump Roast has ample room for almost any pistol, and I think it could easily conceal a 1911. It is tall enough to have the LC9 be pointing downward. It also has spandex compartments designed to hold bicycle tools, which for my purposes work great for holding a spare magazine. The front, zippered pocket is lined with fuzzy fabric that can safely hold a cell phone. The belt is pretty solid, and is roughly 2 inches wide. The belt can also be removed and the Rump Roast be fastened to a traditional belt if that is wanted. The outside fabric/liner is waterproof, so you won't have to worry about rain or sweat corroding your firearm. Lastly, since it is a Timbuk2 product I think it will be inconspicuous enough to not really be noticed, especially when on the road or bike trail.

I give the rump roast 5/5 stars, and highly recommend it for people wishing to conceal carry while riding on a bike or motorcycle. I think it could also work well as an everyday fanny pack that allows quick, Velcro-covered access to a pistol. I'll try to post again after a few weeks of use on the bike regarding how well it works on the trail.

I took the Timbuk2 Rump Roast on a 40 mile bike ride on a nearby greenway trail today. I have a few thoughts on it.

I tried it out with the stock belt that comes with the Rump Roast. I'm right handed. I had to keep it between 5 and 6 o'clock while in my riding position, otherwise it would slowly work it's way to my front, and bump against my leg as I peddled. It slides to the front very easily, which would allow you to slide it forward quick to have an easier angle to remove the gun fast if needed. While wearing it at 5 and 6 o'clock, it would bounce against my back-end when I would ride over big bumps in the road, or if I was peddling out of the saddle on a big climb. This wasn't a huge issue for me on a road bike, but I definitely wouldn't take this on a mountain bike ride with lots of bumps and lots of out-of-the-saddle riding.

The belt reportedly fits waste sizes up to 46". I'm what you would call an in-shape fat guy, but I still have a waste between 44 and 46. This belt was too tight for me, which really gave me an terrible "muffin-top" look when I put on the rump roast over my cycling jersey/shorts. I might go get a different belt just for this. Better yet, I should just lose inches on my waste. Either way, if you're a large guy, be warned that you may need an after-market belt to wear with this product.

Riding with the Ruger LC9 in a DeSantis Superfly pocket holster (shown in prior post), the gun did not shift around at all inside the Rump Roast. Neither did the spare magazine in the tool holder.

The outside pocket that's made for cell phones was plenty big to hold my large cell phone. However, since the top flap has to be open to get to the zippered, fake fur compartment, your firearm would be exposed when you open it to get your phone out. I'd recommend against putting your phone in their unless you need to (if you want to stay concealed).

Overall, I think this is one of the best options out there for concealed carry on your person while cycling. Until I loose weight or get a bigger belt to use with this product, I'll be concealing my gun in my Camelbak pack (not as easy of access to the gun, but is a lot more comfortable while riding). As soon as I'm able though, the rump roast will be my go-to option for cycling, or even hiking or other outdoor activities for that matter.
