The use of Mobile Shooting Ranges

What do people think about the use of mobile shooting range for training classes and recertifications?

Without knowing what type of mobile range you're talking about, its hard to say.

Personally I don't see anything wrong with mobile ranges as long as they are as safe as a normal range, good backstop and such, PLUS legal in your area. I'm guessing you are thinking of using these ranges in out of city locations where shooting on provate land is authorized?

I have a small fleet of tractor trailor, and converted two of them into an indoor shooting range. They are 2 lane with savage range systems target units that rotate 90 degrees. the inside has been renforced with bullet proof steel on all sides and back stop. with all material installed they are 15 yards.

Sounds kind of neat, but I'd be careful with the backstop steel so that it's not hit by a bullet. Likely what would happen is the bullet will hit the steel and ricochet back at you.

Sounds like a cool setup though.

Sounds like it's more economical than land purchase, build out, and zoning complications. So long as its safe, and not illegal as a student i'd have no problem using it. Do you have exhaust fans in it?

Jerry, I am currently researching the feasibility of a tractor-trailer mobile range, including fabrication costs and costs of operation. Can you give me any details on how you set yours up, what the materials and build costs were? I have looked at the commercially available units (Road Range) and they are in the half-million range for a new one, over $100,000 for a beat-up used unit. I was hoping for something a little less high-tech and a whole lot cheaper.

I am new on this site and not up to speed on personal messaging, but if you know the ropes perhaps you could PM me with specs and maybe some pictures?

Hey Cliff - I noticed that the last post before yours was made in Jan. of 2011, and Jerry's post was made the same day. His last post was also the same day on another thread. He only has 5 total posts on this site, so the chances that he's going to see your post here are pretty slim.

The PM system is easy to use though, and he may have his settings set to notify him by email when someone PMs him, so that's worth a try. Just click on his user name and a drop-down menu will appear with several choices, one of which says, "Private Message." Just click on that and send your inquiry. Maybe you'll get lucky and he'll get it and get back to you. He hasn't posted here for almost three years though.

Interesting topic. You could still post back here and let us know what you find out (if anything).
