The Ultimate Trigger Reach Chart

Do you have small hands? Do you have trouble finding a gun that fits?

As a man with incredibly small hands, finding a properly fitting gun proves to be fairly elusive. Either my hand doesn't fit, or I can't work the controls very well, so in my quest to find a better fitting gun, I've created a chart of Trigger Reach measurements for many common handguns.

Why trigger reach? Well if you have average or large hands, you may never know the agony of trying to shoot a gun that's simply too big for your fingers to shoot. Even some of the famed 'pocket nines' simply have triggers that are too far away for my fingers to adequately reach. For example, when I grip a Glock 19, I have to rotate my hands so far around the grip to get my finger on the trigger properly, that it makes it impossible for me to reach the mag or slide release levers, not to mention that this creates a borderline dangerous grip. Thanks - interesting data and very helpful in comparing various options.

This is especially important if two people (e.g., a woman with small hands vs a man with large hands) are having to share for some reason.

So, is there some method of measuring one's hand to find the size that should fit best?

This looks helpful when one can handle some gun and get an idea of how it fits them, then look to those larger or smaller as appropriate.

Will Men's Warehouse do a fitting for you?:wink:

I wish! Two for one guns would be great. I did perform some unofficial research trying to find a measurement that was reliable, but the closest I could come was a rough estimate (with a very small sample size).

If you measure from the tip of your index finger to the crease of your knuckle where it meets your palm (ie: your finger's hinge point), and add an inch, it will be close. Works perfectly on me, not so much on my wife who has long fingers.

Long story short- if your trigger finger never bends to 90 degrees when you pull the trigger, your reach is probably too long. If you are twisting your hand around the grip for your finger to reach the trigger, then your reach is too long. Not a perfect science

Why not go to the local gun shop and try a few? Shopping is perfectly acceptable if guns are involved.

Agreed, but many a person is sold a gun that doesn't actually fit them, or they buy it simply on brand notoriety.

My grip is on the smaller side too. I carried a G23 using a Hogue grip and it was not a problem. But when I went to a .45 I had to go with the G21sf and G30sf. The regular grips for the .45 and 10mm (same platform) are a bit much on the Glock.
