The Truth about stopping power

I argue with a co-worker about stopping power daily he keeps telling me a 45 is the only way to go, and I like my 357 mag. and today I see the Army wants to replace its 9mm. and they aren't sure what caliber they need.

They also argued the point of auto vs. revolver in the PDF and agreed you have more rounds with an auto, but you don't need as many if you have better stopping power and know how to use it.
I just watched a PDF that is too large to post but it boiled down to after all the test were completed the best stopping/killing power was using a HP bullet 357 mag. with a full length barrel.

Don't forget the Military is using FMJ not HP so the 9MM they use does not have stopping power as the 9MM we use for self defense.

This has already been discussed in this Forum: http://www.usacarry.com/forums/general-firearm-discussion/45567-army-wants-harder-hitting-pistol.html

What the Army wants and what the Army gets are different things. The wish list is always wide open, but there is also reality. There is a reason why NATO uses the same calibers across nations. There is also the cost of switching to a different caliber, which is higher than just switching to a different gun. Lastly, the handgun is not the primary weapon, so why waste money on switching to a different caliber?

Your argument about handgun stopping power has been discussed many times before and will be discussed for eternity. It is irrelevant for the Army, considering the FMJ restriction, unless they consider FN 5.7×28mm or HK 4.6×30mm.

I once had a roommate that was a cop, he carried a 1911. He was retired early for being involved in three shootings. City policy, they feared he would be labeled a "Dirty Harry." Anyway, in one shooting he said they hit a guy 11 times with .45 ACP and .45 LC and the gangbanger survived! He said the guy now rides a wheelchair and $%&*s in a plastic bag but he still survived.

It all comes down to bullet placement.
