A man with a knife has injured 22 children and one adult at a school in China. The incident happened outside a primary school in the village of Chengping in Henan province as pupils arrived for classes on Friday morning.
The attacker, identified as villager Min Yingjun, 36, began his stabbing spree shortly before 8am local time by knifing an elderly woman. He then moved on to attack the pupils, who are between six and 11 years old. He was eventually stopped by security guards and is now in police custody.
Guards have been posted at schools across China following a spate of rampage attacks there in recent years. None of those attacked were killed but 16 pupils were taken to hospital, two of whom were seriously injured. No motive has been given for the attack.
An emergency response team has been set up to investigate the attacks. There have been a number of similar attacks in China in the past few years, some of which were carried out by people who had lost their jobs or felt left out of the country’s economic success.
Two years ago, a man stabbed 28 children, two teachers and a security guard at a nursery in the east of the country.
In August, a man with a knife broke into a school in the city of Nanchang and stabbed two students.
In March 2010, a doctor stabbed eight children to death over a romantic relationship that had gone wrong.
