The real casualty in the gun debate will be training

Now that DHS is trying to buy up all the ammunition supplies to make it scarce, the impact is going to be on training. We all are going to have ammunition, but we are going to face shortages, and most of our shooting is not done in defensive situations, but at the range. The real impact is going to be that we are less well trained to shoot well, which is a more dangerous situation for both us and the public in which we participate. Should we find ourselves in a defensive situation, and knowing that staying well trained is the critical component, we're not likely to be as good a shot as we would be with better availability to an unrestricted ammo supply. It's government thinking at its finest. Keep in mind that there are ways to practice to make up for shortages, and use what means you have to stay proficient to the best of your ability.

Dry practice is critical no matter how much ammo you have to burn through.

I do not think he is talking about dry fire practice. He is talking about Conceal handgun qualifications, defensive training with pistol rifle and shotgun.

Despite the large orders various government agencies have put on order, I doubt that will have significant effect on ammo availability and pricing. It's the rush to stock up before any bans or restrictions are (hopefully never) implemented that have driven the prices up and the availability down.

Keep in mind those government orders are a maximum they may purchase, and are four or five year contracts. And those contracts are each with just one maker, not all of them. So if ATK is busy making 100,000,000 .40S&W for DHS, Remington and Winchester and Federal are making ammo for us.

And none of that explains why .22LR is all but vacant from the shelves. CCI makes upwards of 8 pallets a day of the stuff.
