The whole rotting system is falling down upon the citizen. Case, after case, after case, of this behavior and there is one overarching theme: the LEO(s) almost always get away with this unscathed. Still on the job, no reprimand, still in line for promotion, and an apprentice to boot in this case. Every single LE department and agency in this country needs a house cleaning, DA's need to grow a set, and the folks need to speak out en masse.
I sincerely believe that most DA's and prosecutors are under the same intimidation that Mr. Byrge suffered. Maybe no one has come to the door but the implications have been made via some route.
In today's world, any interaction with the cops could be a life changing event. And... it won't be positive.

Agree with everything you said, except one: I would reword the first sentence above to read, "In today's world, any interaction with the cops could be a life-ending event," and then eliminate the last sentence because it's just unnecessary at that point.
Good grief these never-ending stories just piss me off more than I can articulate. I'm glad to know about it, and thank MasterGadgets for that, but these things are just so sickening. It's hard not to be desensitized to them, so often are they raised here and everywhere that people gather to converse in support of constitutional liberty. To allow one's self to be desensitized however, is to allow government to abuse its constitutional authority in your name on the political front, and allow one's own humanity to be blinded on a moral front. I implore everyone so-tempted, not to turn a blind eye to these abuses.

I am infuriated. I live 20 miles from there and have many friends that way. I will find out more details. I will see what can be done to help out as needed. HATE IT WHEN OUR EMPLOYEES DO THIS CRAP! HATE IT.
Ok, I just called and spoke to Mark Byrge. So far he is not able to get serious legal help. American Fork is a small town - well, it was when I was growing up. Now it is mid sized. Mark told me it was ok to put out his address and phone # if anyone wanted to help. If you decide to do so just specify if it is for his campaign (running for office to work against such abuses) or if it to help financially. He wants everything above board on his campaign.

His politics seem to be closest to libertarian. I'll ask in more detail tomorrow but his focus seems to get gov out of the way.

No argument from me. I could believe this story in some big city or in some tiny town way out in the boondocks. Possibly in some rural town in southern Utah where there are a few towns actually controlled by Fundamentalists (Polygamists - NOT Mormons, Mormons have been out of the polygamist business for a hundred years or so). But this occurred in a town of 21,000 just 20 miles out of the Salt Lake Valley. The kind of place people don't lock doors. Think of a bigger Mayberry.
If it could happen in American Fork it could happen anywhere.

Two years ago my wife was accosted at the grocery store by a LEO who detained her over an hour for parking crooked within the lines of the parking space. He repeatedly wanted to search her and the car. He told her she was required by law to tell him if she was taking any prescription meds. He administered a field sobriety test but wouldn't let her use her French crutches (braces) which she needed to walk at all. She had called me while it was happening. She turned-on her recorder and caught the entire thing on audio. I arrived at the scene with a lawyer. The cop then ended the incident and left. Several months later he did the exact same thing to her physical therapist in the same parking lot. A local young lady told me last week he did it to her. For those in NYS, this is the Montgomery Town Police.
