I have fired this weapons platform in it's full up military configuration and I can say that it is one well designed, reliable piece of gear. With a suppressor and an EOTECH sight this thing is fast on target and relatively "quiet". I knew that DELTA were using it but didn't know the SEALS got some as well. I would have thought they would have gone the SCAR route however I do know that they dropped funding for the SCAR Mk16 but are continuing with the SCAR Mk17.

I've got buddy who's a former spec war operator, veteran of the first Gulf War and Iraqi that's currently a FI. When they aren't teaching courses they spend their days shooting and trying to "break" a wide variety of firearms. He and his colleagues give the H&K 416 very high praise for reliablity and usefulness in close quarters combat. This was his quote in a recent e-mail

" I've been giving the 416 praise for some time! Cleaning is DEFINITELY easier than a M4, the system operates flawlessly, it's accurate, modular (read; lots of accessories can be added), and a bit lighter. Although it operates by gas it doesn't get any crud near the chamber. The gas tube is near the front sight and is easy to remove and clean. Basically it fixed the few probs the M4 has".

That sounds like a winner to me!

I also like the 416, it has corrected many issues that the M16 series has. It is a great shooter.

Now the below is not a bash on your original posting, but on the way MASS MEDIA spins the story, good or bad.

I like a good story now and then.
One I love is the line where NEWS REPORTS state a buddy of a buddy or former SF/SO/AFSOC or SEAL make these claims. One, I am not part of this type of operation, but do know that you will not be given full information and disclosure on this, recent, current or near future mission and loadout equipment for this type of people. It is not the way they do business, too many people are trying to get information about this and any other mission. Let the GOOD GUYS have thier space and quit putting them on blast.

Just another piston gun, nothing more nothing less. I prefer the LWRC myself, but that's just me.

The U.S. Army did some tests with the H&K and found some very embarrassing MOA shift after 2500 rounds. Why ? Don't know but it was reported and they are still using direct impingement guns. Rather any Tier One unit is using these or others is still up for debate.

I do know some SF ODA's have made unit purchases of LWRC. Anything more than that would require being a member of said unit and knowing what you are carrying into harms way.

We don't really need to know.

First I'd like to know what branch of the United States military you claim to be with ? What unit are you with that is even touching the H&K piston gun ?? Last time I checked, almost nobody was using the H&K and those that did had them taken away to go to another unit. Think Okinawa, Japan.

There is no such thing as a "gas tube" in a piston gun. It is called and "operating rod" and is pushed by gas inertia through the same type of gas port with low profile gas block underneath the rail and is released at the front of the weapon rather than in the into the operating components. Bolt carrier group, fire control group etc. Therefore running cooler and much less dirty over extended shooting operations. There will be some build up of carbon in the chamber and on the working components over time, but not nearly the direct impingement type of fouling. Operating rods can and do break over time. But IMHO it is a much nicer system than the current DI M4/M16 varients in the field.

FWIW I would rather own and or be issued the LMT CQB MRP piston gun before an H&K. Much nicer system and easier to strip down the piston rod for cleaning.
