WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama ousted Gen. Stanley McChrystal as the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan on Wednesday, saying his scathing published remarks about administration officials undermined civilian control of the military and eroded trust on the president's war team.

Obama chose McChrystal's immediate superior - Gen. David Petraeus - to take over the troubled 9-year-old war in Afghanistan.

The president said he did not make the decision to accept McChrystal's resignation over any disagreement in policy or "out of any sense of personal insult."

"I believe it is the right decision for our national security," Obama said in a statement in the Rose Garden, where he was flanked by Petraeus along with Vice President Joe Biden, Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama says he has accepted the resignation of Gen. Stanley McChrystal with regret, but is certain that it is the right decision for the country's national security and the future of the U.S. mission in Afghanistan.

Speaking in the Rose Garden, Obama says McChrystal's biting comments about the president and his aides in a magazine article did not meet the standards of conduct for a commanding general.

Obama named Gen. David Petraeus to assume McChrystal's role as the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan. He says the move will allow the U.S. to maintain leadership and momentum in the war.

Obama made the announcement following a private meeting with McChrystal and a separate meeting of his national security staff.

Ok I saw only bits of this and as usual the POTUS proved himself to be a worthless POS. now to the Generals. I dont have a problem especially in this case with McChrystal speaking his mind.........the jackass in the White House deserves it. Ok I know the rule of the military and that McChrystal was way out of line, still doesnt change my mind. Here is my point of contention, McChrystal VOTED FOR THIS IDIOT, WHAT THE HELL DID HE THINK HE WAS GOING TO GET!!!! excuse my screaming. It honestly makes me wonder if the general is capable of decision making. Dont rag me guys, I have all the respect in the world for this man, but HE PUT THIS GUY IN OFFICE and he thought by so doing that he was going to get what kind of CIC exactly??:angry:

I don't know if you read the RS article itself or not, but I didn't see anything there I would consider all that bad in the context of what basically amounts to informal locker room banter between men. Sure, they joked about some government officials - who doesn't?

The way I see it there's only 2 possible explanations: 1) Stan McChrystal knew exactly what he was doing. He needed a personal exit strategy to avoid becoming Obama's fall guy for Afghanistan. or 2) The RS writer sold them out. You think the 4-star is going to let some hippie rag reporter into his inner sanctum, no strings? Probably was supposed to be understood anything overheard was off the record unless explicitly, specifically allowed. Hell, they're talking classified half the time anyway. Reeks of a leftist sabotage by the editors of Rolling Stone.

Either way, I have nothing but even more respect for a rare, true warrior general, in this case. Obozo be stuffed. Now he'll get what he deserves out of Afghanistan. Too bad it's not going to be what he wants and it will cost even more American lives.

I, too, suspect that this was "banter between men", warrior men to boot, which B. Hussein has no experience with, on both counts.

It's too damn bad if the best man to conduct the war just got booted because that's gonna take a toll in lives. This clusterf..k is looking more like Vietnam all the time.

~~~~~ This clusterf..k is looking more like Vietnam all the time.
If the politicians would let our guys go after anything that walks, talks, crawls, Sh**# behind the rain barrel and ain't been dead for 6 months, then just maybe it'll turn out OK. But I think it is starting to look like a repeat of Nam as well. We must support the guys (Gals) on the ground!
Maybe McChrystal should be put in charge of the forces sent to AZ and TX to take back our sovereign nation.
General McChrystle is a legend in the Spec War community and though it was inane for either he or his staff to 'let their hair down' around a reporter in any event he has served with distinction.
This is an obvious Obama victory on several fronts: He gets to look Presidential canning someone who was more than a community organizer, he gets to put Petraeus at the helm of a sinking ship, damaging any political clout he may have that could threaten Obama's regime.
I hope there's a silver lining on this one, for the sake of the troops.
the generals
at least Gen. Petraus is trying to get the roe changed, i figure Gen. McCrystal may hay raised this in the past and was shot down. but Gen. Petraus has more pull now as obummer realy has no better choice. either way Gen. McCrystal is a legend in sf ops, i mean only sleeping 4hrs. a day, only eating one meal a day and running 7 miles a day speaks volumes on the man.
