The EYES Have It

I don't see many threads talking about eye wear, want to discuss it some? IMO, eye wear is more critical than hearing protection. I've had a couple of experiences in my long shooting life that probably saved an eye. What do you look for when you purchase your shooting glass's. Your favorite lens color for clarity, UV protection, impact, etc. Anyone had any experiences that your safety glass's saved injury? Cost: Anyone own a nice pair of Oakelys or Rudy Project?

I have a perscription set of Rydon from the Rudy Project. I ordered the Tatical version with polarized transition lenses. I wear these glasses as normal sunglasses and for shooting.

When looking for glasses make sure they meet at least the safety standards as safety glasses (the number is escaping me). This way you know they wont shatter like normal glasses will. For shooting its recommmended that you have mil spec (Z87+?) glasses as these have withstood, IIRC, a shotgun from close distance (15 yrds?) without breaking. Clear glasses that meet these specs can be bought at stores like Walmart.

I can say I've had a few brass hit my glasses but the worst thing was my rifle. My Rydons have interchangable lenses so they can pop in and out easily. I was shoting prone (.30-06) and somehow my eye was too close when I squeezed the trigger. The scope hit my lense and popped it out of the frame. I am positive the glasses prevented scope eye.

Pistol shooting has not had any issue except for the ocassional brass falling down.

I don't have them, but I have heard great things about the Rudy Project... I just wear my prescription glasses and sometimes some sunglass wraps around them... I give all my clients Safety glasses to use...

If you're paying more than $10 for a pair of safety glasses - you're paying too much.

For those of you who need a little more proof than just my word, check this out:

One Guy's Safety Glasses Torture Test!

You want to look for something with an ANSI rating of Z87+. That is the most protective eyewear available. And you can find them at any Lowes or Home Depot. Or if you want to get REALLY cheap, go to SafetyGlassesUSA They also have great deals on hearing protection.

My kinda recommendation, effective and inexpensive! So the "Island Cool-Joe" safety shades aren't all that and a bag of chips then... Drag, guess I'll have to spend less money after all.

I wear my prescription motorcycle glasses when shooting. They're impact-resistant and have transition lenses so I can use them indoors or out.
