Some media people think that the "AR" IN AR 15 means "Automatic Rifle" and/or "Assault Rifle" they don't realize is was AR for "ARMALITE" company name. I heard a guy on the radio referring to them that way and he really believed it and did not understand the difference between semi-auto and auto either

no wonder they always get that one all mixed up

I was just posting about this crap in another thread where even fellow gun owners have accepted the liberal terminology of "assault rifle"... Very sad.

On the same note, an AR-15 is a very specific rifle made by Armalite before they were bought out by Colt. So lets all stop referring to our semi-auto rifles as "AR-15s".

More correct terminology could be along the lines of "AR-15 variants". And for those of you who own Bushmasters like me, I own an XM15 M4 type carbine, not an "AR-15".

Yeah mine is a rock river arms "LAR 15" The "LAR" comes from the " Larson brothers that started the rra company

ar 15 has kinda become like kleennex is to tissue paper or q tips to cotton swabs

Just passing by and read the posts and ideas. My full size semi-automatic that accepts a 5, 10, 20 and 30 round detachable box KLIPs, is indeed an Armalite. The AR-15-Car is of another less expensive Olympic Arms. The Mini-14 is a great behind the seat of the pick-up piece. This all shows to go ya that in the media all they and our other enemies have to do is drive their point and agenda in to the brains of the un-informed and it takes hold as Gospel Truth. Obummer is a great crowd pleaser. He hammers his ideas into the masses. His rhetoric is akin to the Fascists and, to me, he appears almost Hitler-ish in his sincere demeanor. It is said that Hitler watched Charlie Chaplain and admired him. The masses, the mob they hear what they want to believe.

I actually own ARs. AR-15 A2 and AR-15 9mm Carbine. The other is a Match Target which Colt named to avoid the AR stigma.

You have done a service. I would bet that there a few people here that might not have known this. As far as the media and even a few pro 2a politicians, please don't confuse them with the facts!

I usually refer to them as AR style rifles instead of AR-15's but it isn't jus the AR's that the media gets wrong. (90%) of the time they say the weapon used in the robbery was a 9mm automatic pistol or a 12 gauge auto shotgun and AR15 auto rifle. I don't know if they don't know the difference or say it on purpose to sway the public to be against all guns. Wanting them to think all are true automatic weapons. It just burns my biscuits when I hear them say it! I have on occasion emailed our local TV stations telling them of their (Mistakes?) They sometimes respond with a thank you for the correction and others ignore it! So much for the fair and balanced?

I saw a firearms show that one of the hosts refered to a "lever action 98 Winchester as the assault rifle of the day" while comparing a modern day AR platform for accuracy and volume of fire... I would honestly think that they would really know better but I guess not.. Think the show was Guns and Ammo TV... Doesn't bode we'll for us gun owners when our own TV hosts use that moniker we all do our best not to use....

Well there is such a thing as an assault rifle in firearms terminology, what there really isn't is the made up "assault weapon".

I think they were simply trying to say AT THE TIME it was the handiest quickest firing weapon available.

a NEW name, would be beneficial. It would also help if someone tries to do an "assault weapons ban"........ since they are really no more than a semi-auto rifle.
