The AR-15 for Beginners

By Mike Martel

The AR-15 for beginners can be a bit intimidating. This is a lot of rifle. We have had a couple posts on AR-15s for home defense. Some people love them, some hate them.

There is a danger of over penetration with a rifle. That is something you have to think about. Just remember though, you will have just as much danger if you shoot at someone with a pistol and you miss. The round can easily go down a hallway and through a door or wall. A rifle will always be more accurate than a pistol if you shoot it correctly.

That means a lot.

Take a look at the excellent video we found that explains all the basics of an AR-15. Let us know in the comments what you think of the video.

It is my understanding that the 5.56 55 grain load will fragment easily and over penetration it's a myth. Great video series btw.

Our greatest fear should not be of failure, but of succeeding at things in life that don't really matter.

5.56 rounds with a cannelure around its full metal jacket will fragment. The AR-15 is one of the best home defense weapons you may own. It's mine, with a shotgun backing it up.

With the AR-15, think multiple home invaders.

Don't care what emotional leftists think about the AR-15. Their ignorance is on display with knee-jerk assessment, clouded by their stupidity to not research facts about this civilian platform.

Can someone explain the difference between an AR-15, an M-16 and an M-4? I had thought the AR was just a civilian version of the M-16 (same except for the select fire capability), but then I've heard it said that it's like the M-4 instead of the M-16. Someone help me become more smarter.

Also, is .223 or .556 the better defense round and why? Thanks.

Thank you. That answered most of my questions. Now just trying to learn whether there is any significant difference in the 556 or the .223 for defense.
