The 3 self-defense tools you should carry every day

I believe there are 3 self-defense tools you should carry every time you leave the house. Since life is strange, you never know what you’re going to encounter so you want as many ways to protect yourself as possible.

The first tool you should carry is a gun. It doesn’t matter if you’re taking a long trip with the family (though, in this case, keep in mind these key rules for inter-state travel with firearms) or running out for 5 minutes to get milk. You and I know that attacks can happen at any time, which is why it’s a huge mistake to ever leave your house unarmed.

Even when I’m heading to a place like the Post Office, where I can’t carry my gun, I still bring my gun with me and leave it (secured) in the car while I go in. I put it back on as soon as I’m back in my car.

Plus, since there are so many gun options available there is absolutely no excuse not to be carrying. You may prefer to carry your gun in an inside the waistband holster at the 4 o’clock position (like I do) or you may want to carry a smaller .380, like the Pico, in your front right pocket (which I also do.)

Either way, don’t be tempted to be lazy and don’t ever walk out the door without your gun, especially when all you have to do is run up a flight of stairs to retrieve it from your bedroom or office.

Also, if you’re not carrying your gun as often as you should because you haven’t found the right holster yet, take the time to select and buy a holster that fits your gun and lifestyle.

Px4knifeThe next self-defense tool you should have is a knife. Just like guns, there are numerous knives on the market. Whatever knife you decide to go with, I recommend getting a folding knife that you can clip to the inside of your pocket. I wear my knife clipped to my front left pocket.

Thankfully, I’ve never needed the knife for self-defense purposes, but I’ve opened enough packages and mail (and helped my wife take off enough price tags) to know how handy it is and that I’ll never walk out of my house without a knife.

If you’re into fixed blade knives, one of my favorites is the Gerber LMF-II. If you’re looking for something a little more affordable, go with the Mora Companion. While I don’t carry fixed blade knives on me (only folding knives), I do keep fixed blade knives in my car and in each of my 72-hour kits.

The final self-defense tool is the only one that never leaves my side. I’m talking about a tactical pen. My tactical pen goes on airplanes with me and it’s even gone into the courthouse when I had to go take care of a ticket. I carry my tactical pen clipped to my front right pocket.

The real beauty of the tactical pen is that you can take it out and carry it in your hand when you feel the need to. In other words, if you’re walking towards a group of people who are giving you uncomfortable vibes, you obviously can’t pull out your gun and you can’t open up your knife as if you’re prepared to stab someone. But, you can take out your pen and hold it in your hand. That way if something did happen you would be able to quickly react and defend yourself.

As far as the best pen to get, I would advise you not to be cheap. Buy quality so you only have to buy once. Also, make sure you don’t buy a pen that has a “crown” on the top or some type of sharp top for what they call DNA collection purposes. You need the top of the pen to be flat because you want to hold the pen in the “ice pick” grip, which means you put your thumb on the cap for added support. Using the ice pick grip with the thumb on the top gives you superior striking power.

The bottom line is, 99% of the time these three self-defense tools are with me. Pretty much the only time they’re not with me is when I’m at the Post Office, flying, or visiting the in-laws in California. So unless you’re going to one of these places, or somewhere similar, try to always be prepared with your gun, knife, and tactical pen. Also, don’t forget to practice drawing/deploying each weapon wherever you decide to keep it on your body.

unless you are trained properly those "tools" will be almost useless. if you're not trained in it's use how would you use your tacticool pen?

Why not just carry the damn thing at home? (serious question if I am wearing clothes I'm armed)

Still missing from that collection: (1) a flashlight and (b) OC spray. Both are more practical than the folding knife and the tactical pen.
agreed, however you can carry just so much. I usually carry OC and an ASP. I have no need to clear rooms in the dark so the flashlight on my cell phone is sufficient

Actually, a flashlight is quite handy for non-lethal situations. Temporary blinding someone with a flashlight can be quite effective as a deterrent or distraction. I have personally used my flashlight for both, once for deterring someone that was getting too close to me on the street and once for distracting someone to get away (also on the street). In both of these cases, I suspected some sort of mugging or pickpocketing scheme as, in the first instance, the person was walking right next to me or, in the second instance, was directly approaching me. In both cases, the use of OC spray was (legally) unwarranted.
