This came in my email today. It was really nice of her to send a thank you note!

The cost for the lodging, entertainment, and security by the Secret Service for the June 2013 Africa trip by President Barack Obama and his family cost $2,189,727, according to documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act by the government watchdog group Judicial Watch.
In addition, the flight costs to, around, and from Africa for that trip cost $8,104,224, and the total cost of the trip has been estimated by numerous media reports as somewhere between $60 million and $100 million.

In late March of this year, President Obama stayed in Brussels, Belgium for about 24 hours on a weeklong trip through Europe. Lodging at The Hotel in Brussels cost $1.5 million, as we reported in April, including rooms for the president and his entourage, as well as for the advance team in the weeks preceding the visit.

Less than two and a half months later, President Obama returned to Brussels again for about 24 hours for a G-7 meeting in early June, once again stayed at The Hotel, and again incurred a cost of $1.5 million. This time, the documents cited a need for "399 Lodging Rooms, office rooms, and conference rooms from 5/22/2014 – 6/6/2014":

I was really exhausted after Barack took our family on a luxury vacation in Maine a few weeks ago. I just had to get away for a few days.

Cordially,

Meh.

I guess none of this stuff mattered until President Obama, because I can't remember ever seeing private party audits like this questioning every single nickle spent before. I don't know what's a good price when traveling with the sort of security a President of the United States needs, but I'm not surprised that it's expensive.

Anyways, better recalculate... by now Obama might have left the water running while shaving or something. Gotta make sure to get everything possible in there, fellas.

2010 called and wants their fake news story back. Based on an unnamed Indian official as the source of the information :fie:
Nice try, but who is doing the faking here? Nobody mentioned and Indian official but you, so who exactly are you accusing of a fake story? Since you're the only one to mention it, I guess you must be accusing yourself.
.
There was a real story about this back in 2010. It originated from the news agency Press Trust of India and was picked up by many media outlets in the U.S.. I guess that makes you the fake here, Nick. The Press Trust of India was quoting an estimate from "a top official of the Maharashtra Government privy to the arrangements for the high-profile visit," according to PolitiFact.com. If his wish to remain anonymous makes the story fake, then probably a third of the news stories about government are fake since anonymous sources are so common today. But the source did get the cost wrong. His estimates were far too high. And he didn't estimate $2 billion by the way. I don't know where that number came from. He estimated $200 million per day. We weren't spending that much per day to fight in Afghanistan. The trips typically cost anywhere from 20 to 60 million. We can't know for sure because the bulk of the non-flight costs are tied to Secret Service operations, and those figures are never released.
