Taxes

Curious as to how many of you approve if increased taxes on items, such as cigarettes or alcohol, used by state and federal government to curb their use.

Why not remove the taxes on them and let people kill themselves off if they want? Increase insurance premiums on smokers and drinkers to cover the increased costs of looking after them. If they find that premiums are prohibitive then they have a choice to make.

Won't work out very well because the alcoholics and the cigarette smokers are also killing and injuring the rest of us.

Tax the hell out of it. We should do the same with all drugs being used for recreational purposes. Legalize them then tax the hell out them.

Using taxes as a social policy mechanism has always stuck in my craw (not that I know or care what a "craw" is).

No, I don't approve of taxing behaviors. Not that I am a smoker, or much of a drinker for that matter, but it's a real short step these days to saying "Hey, gun owner, let's tax the hell out of your "lifestyle" too." That would be on top of the Pittman-Robertson taxes we already pay on our gun purchases, which let's face it, most people don't even know they are paying, and sales taxes too. And here in the most taxed state in the nation, I am fairly certain a firearms tax will surface soon. This morning I was told about a new scheme to require gun owners to get insurance that is being proposed by, naturally, a group of downstate, read New York city, legislators.

the government doesn't like guns, some places like Chicago and CA want to impose high taxes on ammo, do you like it when it is you who is targeted with the social engineering crowd?

Alcohol and cigarettes have no value whatsoever to society. They only have value to those addicted to them and those who traffic in them.

what the hell do I care about value to society? I enjoy drinking wine and beer and I don't give a rat's butt what you or anyone else thinks about drinking alcohol.

as long as my activities do not impact anyone one else, it is none of their damned business what I do!

One would have to be a pretty insignificant to be able to live without impacting anyone else. Maybe you are such a being. I don't know.

In any event, your desire to be drunk has no bearing on how much we tax alcohol. Drink all you want after you paid for it.

Personal attack?

You claimed that you could drink alcohol without it impacting anyone else. I merely pointed out that it is unlikely to be true, unless you were a very insignificant being.

I've never met anyone who's behavior didn't have an impact on other people.

You implied that you were such a person, apparently in opposition to the taxation of alcohol.

Do you really think that your behavior is in a complete vacuum entirely separated from any impact on any other human?

Oh, and that badge of yours - apparently "politically incorrect" is only "correct" when you spit.

i dont agree with taxing individual products, this simply sets precident for them to do it for anything, up to and including guns and ammo. If a person wants to smoke, or drink, let them. They know the possible consequences and will have to live (or die) with them. Make it so that they cant get public money - i.e. Medicaid - for treatment if they chose that route. Also, whats to stop the governement from putting taxes on firearms and ammo so high that few can afford them? Oh wait, they did that in the 1930's with that $200 tax stamp and the national firearms act on short barreled rifles and shotguns, and full auto weapons. And before you say $200 wasn't alot of money, remember that at that time a good car could cost less than $500 new, and the average american income in the 30's was something like $230 a month.

The lib-o-rats will soon be taxing oxygen, sunlight and the breeze. They never seen a tax that they do like. To many people thought that taxing sin was OK. But now the lib-o-rats need more money to waste.

I originally posted this question to see how many hypocrites we have on this site. Then I thought, surely they'll get where I'm going with this and not respond.

If you support targeted, discriminatory taxes on "sinful" items, then I'm sure you won't be complaining when the same thing happens to our ammo. The typical "do unto thee, just not unto me" attitude is sickening and will be the undoing if ALL our rights and freedoms.

To those that responded that those taxes shouldn't exist whether it affects you our not, I salute you.

To those that support the taxes, you might as well line up with all the libtards and start handing over your guns. Your hypocrisy makes me sick.

The problem with taxing something like tobacco and alcohol when enough people quit that behavior who or what will the gov tax next? The gov has a need for our money so if everyone quit they would tax some other product that the gov thinks is socially abhorrent. Candy, ammo, soda, brass. See where this is going? The gov has to have revenue. Don't like what the other guy uses, well let's tax that! Just don't my "sinful" stuff!
Of course, it's the other guys stuff thats "sinful" not mine!:shout:
