taurus 738 tcp how is this gun does it has any problems . thinking about getting one

me too. Gander Mountain has it on sale for $280 and I've got a $20 off coupon from my gun club.

I'm thinking of using it for backpacking as I really wouldn't want to carry anything much heavier.

I got one in April, and have been nothing but pleased with it. Not a single hiccup so far, with about five different types of range ammo (WWB, Remington UMC, a couple other FMJ that I can't recall right now, and Corbon DPX (my carry ammo). It conceals very easily, and is an easily controllable little pistol. Some people don't like the Bulldog pouch that comes with it, but, although I usually pocket carry with a Desantis Super Fly, and do like, and sometimes carry in the pouch.

The slide lockback when empty, and coming with two magazines also influenced my decision, something that it's two closest competitors (in my book, the Ruger LCP and the Keltec P3AT) didn't have.

I think there were problems when it first came out, but I have had none. I am very happy with mine.

Also go to Taurus Armed.net - Index for some great feedback.

I have one and really regret buying it. IMO it should never have been put on the market. Constant Failure to feed, Fail to eject. I've tried various ammo, etc. If you can get through 6 shots without a problem you are lucky. Not only me, do a search around the net and you'll read way more bad reviews then good.

There are many bad reports....there are also many good reports as well. I only have an issue with their lack of fit and finish compared to the higher end guns. I will explain.......they have sharp edges on the slide, and other parts of the gun are also sharp when they should be totally smooth. I sliced my finger pretty bad, simply by racking back the slide of one at a gunshop......the cut was pretty deep and I didn't even feel it "that is sharp". We took a good look at the gun, and were amazed at all the sharp edges all over the gun. They may look nice.......priced low....and typically shoot well.....but I will not waste my money on any of their semi-autos.

Jbirdy1; you can find bad products from any manufacture, so no need to brand the entire Taurus Company because your is defective. I'll bet you haven't even attempted to return the gun to Taurus for repair, have you? As for searching the 'Net for bad reviews - I can find a bad review on any handgun you can think of, and most of them are from people just like yourself, for instance... Just last month Beretta announced a recall on all Beretta .22 cal. NEO's for a possible safety malfunction that could allow the little gun to fire involuntarily if the safety selector is switched from "safe" to "fire". In 2004 Glock had a recall on their Glock 26 models after several Police Armourers deemed their Polymer mounted slide tracks unsafe. Ruger has recalled their LCP's for inadvertantly firing when dropped with a round chambered. When is the last time Taurus recalled a handgun? :pleasantry:

I didn't "brand" the ENTIRE Taurus Company..just the TCP. Taurus does make some good products, every revolver I've shot or handled from Taurus seemed top notch especially for the price.
BUT...
I maintain that the TCP has problems. Taurus dropped the ball on this one. As for sending it back, I will do that this week, as again, reading reports and others experiences, a LOT of people have sent the gun back with various levels of satisfaction.
Really, it's all I can do.

Agree 100%. I'd be much more confident buying a Taurus revolver than one of their autos. My preferred gun dealer stopped carrying Taurus autos because, by his estimate, 4 out of 10 had a problem of some sort. He was tired of unhappy customers. Obviously the pro-Taurus crew on this site is part of the other 60% Good for them. I like my LCP. I guess I'm part of the 95% that's happy with that purchase.

And there are some people who think Obama is a great president....

Obviously you do since you brought it up! I'm a Republican, and a Reagan Conservative, I personally think the Ayatollah BHO sucks! We were talking handguns, not politic's. If that's your bag, there is a thread or two here for Politic's, take Obama there...

Actually I was using the Obama reference to point out that now matter how useless, questionable, poor-quality, etc. something is, there's always somebody who'll like it.

I was not accusing you of being an Obama-ite. I save that insult for my worst enemies

There has been countless post's on the Taurus TCP, some are good reports and some are not, to me, all the small 380s in the $300-$350 dollar price range are not much differant in operation, they seem to all have simalar problems, the biggest cause of trouble with the FTF and FTE, stovepipes, is caused by ether limp wristing or the weapon needing cleaning, and I do not care who made it LCP, TCP, Keltech, Diamond back, I know the LCP seems to be tops in popularity, and personaly I have or have had all the guns I mentioned except the Diamond back, they all have there plus's and minus's, accuracy is about the same, my personal experiance, has found, the LCP trigger is way to long, also the slide did not lock back on the last shot, and the gun I had seemed to be overly touchy to limp wristing, the Keltech seemed to have the most felt recoil, I meen that little sob really stung, the Taurus TCP to my wife and I seemed to be the nicest of the bunch, was not perfect, but the others were not ether, and I have to say anybody that buys one of these little pop guns and comes on here and says they have shot 500 rds, or 1200 rds or whatever and NEVER had any malfunction, I would bet are not being exactly truthful, I had some problems with all of them they were minor, but still ?, also no matter how many rds my wife and I fire threw these guns, I will never trust one of them for a main carry, we do carry them as back up, along with our Glocks, but on there own never

Well sir, that's exactly what I'm saying and it's the absolute truth. I shoot my LCP probably twice a month, putting 30-50 rounds through it each time. I've had it for more than a year. You do the math. Not a single malfunction. That's a fact.

I use proper technique (no limp-wristing), use reliable ammo, and clean the gun after each session. A co-worker of mine has has his LCP longer than I have and he's never had a problem either.

When somebody tells me they've never had a problem with their TCP I believe them. When somebody tells they've had problems with their LCP I believe them too. But I see is far more people with TCP problems than with LCP problems, or Kel-Tec problems, or Sig 238 problems, etc.

I understand "Limp wristing" can cause FTL and stove piping, and am cognizant of it when I shot my TCP. But often I would get a jam up simply racking the first round. In fact, with the slide back, like after the last shot, I would put in the mag, release the slide and it would jam, FTL, EVERY time. That's not a limp wristing problem.
I'm in the process of returning mine for repair and will gladly report how Taurus responds.
I've read how there were problems with the magazines on the ones below serial number 60000. Mine IS a 5xxxxx series, so maybe that's the issue. I will keep you guys informed one way or the other.
But I am inclined to agree that the TCP (I won't speak of the LCP or Keltech as I haven't fired them) would not be a dependable choice for CC. Even if the problems aren't in design and manufacture (Which I believe) but are in fact user problems (i.e. limp wristing) then that tells me these guns are too finicky to be carried everyday and used in an emergency response situation where all things will NOT be ideal.

Well good for you, the guns that I have owned and shot were not that dependable, I will NEVER carry one of the small 380s as a main carry weapon, a back up maybe, but not as the only weapon, since I don't see ever spending the money for a Sig or Kahr, I won't worry about them
