I am thinking of buying either a Taurus PT709 or a Ruger LC9 can anyone who has fired or owns these guns comment on their ability?

Feel good in the hand?
Accurate?
Reliable?
Recoil?
Or anything else/

Thank you

I'd never rely on a Taurus for safety and self defense unless I had no other choice. You do have a choice.

Go with the Ruger. Or S&W. Or Glock. Or Springfield........

If you want a reliable 9 mm. Check out the Glocks. Very reliable & available in different sizes
Between the two you mentioned i would go with Ruger.

709 felt good in the hand after a hogue grip. Stovepiped twice when a friend of mine was shooting it. He was limpwristing it. Accuracy? Lol yeah kind of accurate but just a self defense/get off me gun. It does have a thumb safety so the trigger pull Is substantially shorter than my LCP. I haven't shot and lc9, I have only held one.

I have a LC9 and have shot about 300 rounds through it and ave found it to be very reliable and accurate. The only to get used to was the long pull of the trigger due to it being a DAO semi. Really like the size for conceal also. Have not shot the Taurus so cannot comment.

I chose the LC9 for tuckability. So thin, reliable & cost effective to deny.
I find it a little top heavy feeling in my hand, but this isn't a target/range pistol. However, you will want to practice enough, with it's long trigger pull, to stay accurate.
I use a Theis IWB and carry it every day.

Regarding your list, I can comment about my decision to by the PT-709.

Feel good in the hand - not even close...the 709 felt much better.
Accurate - it's very consistent for me
Reliable - it eats just about any kind of ammunition, and it especially likes my Hornady CD cartridges.
Recoil - kicks pretty good, but controlable.

I have read that you can change the hammer and something for the trigger so the LC9 trigger only travels halfway before firing.

I have read some good reviews on the Taurus but am not sure on the reliability and people say the Taurus customer service is not that good if you have to send it in for work.

You shouldn't alter the trigger on a gun you carry, the LCP has a purpose built trigger its supposed to have a long pull to help keep you on target in a emergency situation when you jerk the trigger.

I opted for the LC9 over the Taurus. My reason for choosing the Ruger is I have owned two other Ruger handguns and they were both very reliable. The LC9 has a long trigger pull but it doesn't bother me as I don't want the thing to have a racegun trigger pull. I carry with one in the chamber and the safety on so I don't worry about the thing making a hole in my underwear that I didn't intend. My LC9 rides in a smartcarry holster while I am at work. I have owned one Taurus semi in .45 and it was a good gun, sold it to fund other gun purchases. Enjoy whatever you decide.
PS- It's total crap that the Ruger on comes with one magazine. Crap I tell ya.

Taurus has been making better product in the last couple of years..The warranty on there products is for life...now I know that they had a bad reputation in the past, but...remember the ruger is a new model and has some issues also that you may not like.

like the magazine safety...the external controls that you cannot access because they are to small.

I have the Taurus 709 and it works fine. I also have several other Taurus product and they wor fine also.

Taurus PT111 is also a good option.
Taurus 709 slim
Tautus 24/7 2 Gen

all good products.

Oh did I tell everyone what happend to me 3 weeks ago??

I was giving a class and was performing a one handed reload of my brand new G19 3gen when the trijicon (factory installed) sights broke off from the slide.

When a gun fails it does not matter the brand...it is just going to fail...it is up to you to know how to properly compensate to the malfunction or failure of your firearm.

so if there is a lesson to be learned is do not be a brand myopic...use what works for you.

I would choose the Ruger if it were me. I love their guns but never have cared for Taurus

When I was looking for a 9mm, I shot several, to include the two you are considering. I decided to go with the Taurus 709 Slim. Fit my hand good, recoil was more than manageable, lightweight, will fit in a pocket if need be, site was right on. I have about 700 rounds through it now, no problems whatsoever, eats any ammo I throw at it. I def would buy another one.

Ruger seems to be in favor more, but Taurus is catching up. A lot depends on whether you get a lemon when your purchase a gun.
I still wonder how controllable these guns are when you shoot them, is the recoil really manageable enough for good shot placement?

The question between the 709 and LC-9 for me is no question, I would take the 709 hands down, owned both kept the 709, the only + the LC has over the Taurus is its a bit more concealable, but the 709 excells everywhere else, everybodys got there opinion, and thats fine, but if you did not have the idea that one perticular brand is that much better than the other, and you had both guns with you the same day at the range, bets are you would keep the 709 over the LC-9

I own a 709. A good many came out with the extractor set very loose and so after firing they would slip off the spent shell and not pull it out reliably. Hence all the jamming issues. After it was tightened properly it works fine and I haven't had a problem since.

It is too big for a pocket gun so if that's what you want get the Ruger. My only regret is that I wish it could handle a few more rounds in the clip. But then it wouldn't be slim would it?
