So what do you do when you get a knock on the door from someone you don't know? I think the worse part about this was the BG was already forced back outside and could have just ran away. Instead shot through the door then ran. Prayers to a full recovery Mr. Lorins.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- A Tampa man was hospitalized overnight after an attempted home invasion.

According to the Tampa Police Department, 74-year-old Robert Lorins was shot in the stomach and is in critical condition at Tampa General Hospital.

Officials said the shooting happened in the 2100 block of Gordon Street just before midnight when Lorins heard a knock at the door.

When he answered, the person outside tried to force their way in. Lorins was able to fight the person off but as he closed the door, the person outside fired a shot into the door.

Lorin's son Brett was home at the time of the attempted break in. By the time he reached the door, his father was shot and the gunman was gone, he said.

The older Lorins, who suffered injured organs and blood loss, is expected to undergo a second surgery today.

Meanwhile, officials said there are no witnesses and an investigation is ongoing.

Robert Lorins sounds like a very brave man My blessings goes out to him and, his family. I hope they catch the Scum Bag who shot him.. He deserves to be laying in Hospitol Not, Robert.

I don't usually answer the door for a stranger. I have iron bars and an iron gate that covers a small front porch/entryway. No one can get to the front door unless I let them in. there is a peep hole in the door. If I do open the door they can not get inside the porch. Also on the rare occasions that I might actually answer I have my gun on. Call me paranoid but I like to look at it as leaving nothing to chance.

I do the same thing. I'm out in the absolute middle of nowhere, so visitors are few and far between. There have been some occasions where someone came to the door and I answered it with my gun pointing at them behind the door, through the glass. The blinds kept them from seeing it. I hate to hear something like that happening, but further backs up my reasoning.

I would not answer the door that late unless I was armed. Not much you can do though when someone shoots through the door.

....and you will have a fighting chance. Would really have sucked if part of that report said he had a gun but left it laying on his coffee table when he answered the door. It doesn't do one any good to carry it unless one ALWAYS carry it, imo.

We never open the door to a stranger. My wiife will just let the dogs bark at whomever it is until they leave without acknowledging their presence. If they tried to break in, they would not go far. She would drop them like a bag of hammers. If really necessary we can talk to the person through the door, but we just don't open our home to strangers ever.

If a stranger knocks on your door or rings your bell, answer by opening a window (2nd Floor) to hold a dialogue, one that doesn't allow easy access into your house, and always with a phone in hand/gun on waist.

Evaluate your home and come up with a game plan for your family to address situations, and whenever there's doubt call 911 and let LE check it out, be safe NOT sorry.

Ga9mm, you really don't point a loaded firearm at people do ya? May I remind you that is a crime? What would happen if you accidently touch the start button?

They don't seem to understand what's out there.....

Yeah we had different up bringings she grew up in quaint lil St. Petersburg it was nothing for her parents to let her and her friends walk to the Mall and hang out all day at 10 or 11. I on the other hand grew up in South FL (Hollywood then Miami) hell I went to the same school as Adam Walsh. There was none of that crap going on down there. :fie:

Hmmmm, stranger on the porch? Depends.

I also live out where a 911 call takes 20 minutes. All my people know to call first, so if there is a knock on the front door I can pretty well figure it's no one I know or really want to talk to.

Added to that, I have a glass lattice-work (small pane-like) on the top half of the front door and big glass windows on each side (top half only). So I can see anyone standing at the door or either side real well (9 ft wide hall).

It's my feeling that with my gun strapped on and in plain sight - standing a few feet back from the door talking through the door is sufficient. When I find out what's up, then I approach closer and 'talk'.

This home invasion thing has taken off in the US - monkey see, monkey do.

I take no chances - oh yes, if I hear glass breaking, it's fair game.

We live on an acre and a half out in the sticks. Property is fully fenced. First line of defense is a 160 lb black Lab. Second up is a 135 lb collie/shepard mix, and batting clean up is a 15 lb mutt (the loudest of them all).

If you open the gate, or jump the fence you better hope to God that either, or both of the big dogs know you. It's just over 200' from the gate to my front door. If you make it that far...............................

Little dog stays inside and will not stop barking until picked up. Works very well.

That sounds similar to my plans when I get my property...... Doberman for speed and initial knock down, Rotty to come up just a little after the Doby to start crushing bones, and then finally an English Bulldog to take up the rear and comic relief.

LOL, The metal picture was priceless! Thanks for the laugh.

We never open the door at night. We ask who it is through the door and look out the window and I always have the gun in my hand when I go near the door at night and someone is at it. Unless you know who it is don't open the door and even if your expecting someone or take out don't open the door will you have ID who is on the other side.
