Talking with LEO

I have yet to run to my local PD and let them know what's in my home or what's in my gun safe there, so it's kind of the same, LOL.

Have you run to the pd and told them you carry a firearm at home? Where its immediately accessible to you?

Just for you Treo :-)

And thus the debate begins

Nope, my post was not intended to start a debate, you see, I TOLD how I would handle it, not open for debate, is the way it will be. You have brought the debate to the table.

No, I have not, did you not READ what I said . . I said I don't run to them . . never have, never will, what is in my home, my vehicle, is my privacy. NONE of their business, will never be their business, they will never be on my need to know list. If they seem to feel they need to make whats private their business, they damn straight better have a good 'warrantable' reason. Stop me for a violation, that's the business at hand, do business, conclude business, bye see you later. I have a clear record, nothing of interest to be found, nothing. New Mexico is a FENCE OUT state, meaning, my property is private, gate closed, no one has reason to tresspass, only those invited onto my property have entry. If I were to call the Police, and here in rural new Mexico it would be the Sheriff, then that becomes an invitation to enter my property. Our Sheriff here gets this, and backs this, they had to call a special meeting over the census takers tresspassing, the Sheriff told them very specifically to leave their materials at peoples gates or he would arrest them for tresspassing, and then he told them even he, himself needed a warrant to enter private property here unless he was called.

I always carry a firearm at home, on my property, we have mountain lions, bobcats, bears, wolves, coyotes and other wildlife here that can attack people, have attacked people, and protection is a must at all times when out and about in open spaces.

But this is ALL way off topic, I was not starting a debate, just stating the facts as I apply them, after that whatever you choose is your business and no debate from me.

What does this mean? I thought it's none of their business?

What it means is that when you are carrying you really should inform, only as a courtesy. When they pull up your drivers license information the DO see that you have a CCL, and to some it MAY make them nervous that you didn't inform them even though you are not obligated to do so in my state. I see THAT GESTURE as an honesty we should extend in that moment. But like I said, if my gun is locked in my gun safe and not accessible, then no need to inform as it is not in play so to speak in the reachable environment. I guess it's about semantics in some way, we do need to have trust in a bi-directional way with LE in some circumstances. I hope I have made that position clear, if not, let it go, not worth debate or further discussion.

To offering an opinion and starting the debate, again

Since we appear to be going here again please enjoy the standard Treo response
In my experience those who do inform tend to be a little more authoritarian and tend to favor tighter restrictions on handgun permits.

Absent a legal requirement to do so, it’s ultimately your choice, do what works for you. I choose not to because IMO all it does is adds more time to the stop and gives the cop one more hassle to deal with.
In Colorado I am not required to inform the officer unless I am asked then I am required to surrender my permit w/ a valid ID. (CRS 18-12-204).

In Colorado my permit information is not tied to my driver’s license in anyway, the only way the cop is going to know I’m armed is if he sees it or asks me.

I don’t generally open carry. I have no objection; I just dress in a way that makes it impractical. If I am in my car my gun is generally on my right hip behind the seat belt I just don’t see the cop noticing it unless he has X-ray vision.

I carry my DL/registration/ proof of insurance in my wallet.

Bearing all that in mind this is how I handle a traffic stop.

As soon as the lights go on I take my wallet out of my pocket and have it in my hand I keep it in my hand until the stop is over. Then I pull as far off the road as I can.

When that cop comes up to the car I have my hands in plain sight on the wheel w/ my wallet in my hand (no reaching for anything and giving the cop a chance to see my gun) I keep my wallet in my hand until the stop is over. I also turn the dome light on at night. IMO this negates the main rationale people give for informing, the cop isn’t going to notice my gun.

So, the cop asks for my papers I open the wallet, he can see everything I’m doing, and I hand him the documents and he does his thing and I’m on my way. No opportunity for him to notice any “suspicious bulges”. No reason for the cop to get nervous. No reason to prolong the stop.

If the cop asks me if I have any weapons in the car I say nothing and hand him my permit and go from there.
The only reason I would inform the cop w/out being asked is if he asked me to step out of the car. In Colorado Springs that means I am almost certain to be patted down, so I hand him my permit before I get out of the car.

IMO “Showing respect” is nothing more than submissive urination, like a dog that pees as soon as you touch it so you won’t beat it..

I am courteous as always, without informing. While it may be true where you live, they can not see my CHL when they run my plates where I live.

Ok...so to set it straight. If the firearm is inaccessible you will not tell them while in your vehicle or your home because private is private is private. If the firearm is accessible you will not tell them at home because private is private is private, but you will tell them in your vehicle because private is no longer private? Is your holstered accessible firearm in play during the traffic stop? Does the officer have the right to take your firearm after you inform? Should you be able to take his firearm from him if it's bi-directional trust?

Sorry, your train of thought is still not clear to me. But I don't think I will ever understand giving up my rights as a courtesy. Or how it's bi-directional trust if having a permit but not informing can make an officer nervous? I have to take for granted he is a trustworthy guy without running any kind of background check on him...but if I don't let him run a background check on me, he shouldn't trust me? So be it.

IMO “Showing respect” is nothing more than submissive urination, like a dog that pees as soon as you touch it so you won’t beat it..

Probably one of my favorite quotes of all times.

I would not call it a re run..........
It is amazing that so many people on this sight voice thier opinion on how they feel LEO steps on thier rights regarding producing a CCW when they are not requiered to.

I thought it was refreshing to talk to a local officer who respects our rights.

Yet insted people here are knocking it. Would you rather hear more of the law abiding LEO then ones who are not?

Well, some people are newer to the site and don't necessarily find these type of discussions in a search.

For those that are tired of this debate, no one is forcing you to read and reply.

No kidding! All the people complaining about the thread made it much worse with their comments when they should have just went on. We aren't impressed because they have been here a long time and has read every thread. I have been here a little while and have seen the same topics over and over and I do a quick glance and leave. Some people just like to bash others to make themselves feel better! Okay, I feel better, now let's hear it, lol

I agree with your friend. It's not relevant to the discussion unless the reason you are being stopped by the police may result in you being searched. So, why bring it up?

Greetings all
A newbie to posting but a long time watcher...

Just thought I would mention an interesting thing that happened to me the other night

It was about 10 pm (Eastern) and I had someone knock at my front door. My porch light was out so I could not see who was there in the dark.
It is extremely rare that anyone would come over that late but we are close to our neighbors and it has happened before.

Before answering the door, I went to my office (in the house) and picked up my Ruger. I put it in my front pocket and had my hand ready when I opened the door.

To my surprise, it was a state trouper in full uniform and the cruiser in the street. Come to find out, he was next door a few days earlier working a theft from an unlocked car (kids) The neighbor had mentioned to him I had cameras and before he had a chance to come over to talk that day, he was called away but promised to come back. It did startle me that he came so late.

We spoke on the porch for about 20 minutes about all kinds of crap, just like we knew each other.

I mention this because I did not tell him I had my gun in my pocket and didn't see any need to since I am no threat to him

I did get pulled over once and informed that state trouper I was armed, he asked where it was and I pointed to my drivers door pocket. He said fine and continued on writing my ticket :( We talked after he gave me the ticket about being a veteran because of my car plates. ( thought the plates might have helped me out but didn't)

I have never had any issues with telling or not telling but I believe when I get pulled over, I will always tell them......so we don't have any accidents :)

A street smart cop doing a traffic stop will assume the occupants are armed.
So if he assumes you are armed there would not be any reason to say anything, unless your states has a law that states you must inform.
But if you were a crook you would ignore that law.
That is why the cop ran your plates before he got out of the vehicle.
