Talking with LEO

Bulldog Pride
Just went to the range yesterday with a friend of mine who is a LEO. We got on the subject of informing a LEO if you are carrying when you are stopped for any reason. We live in Connecticut, Which is a "do not have to notify state". He point blank said, If you are carrying legaly there is absolutly no reason to mention it and he would rather PREFER you not say anything.

I was so glad to hear him say that! It's nice to know there is LEO out there that respect our rights! He's been on the force for almost 25 years and is a very by the book officer. :pleasantry: :victory:

Your buddy is right.

We have mandatory notification in Ohio. Google the name "Daniel Harless" to find out why that's an EXCEPTIONALLY bad idea.

All good and I agree. But I also wonder at what point he thinks it becomes time to notify. 'For any reason...". If it goes from stopped to getting out of the car? If asked to produce documents and that means one is also reaching toward their firearm? No intention to start or restart a debate...no interest in philosophical issues in this question, but the practicalities form the LEO side...just thinking that the scenarios are not always as cut and dried as presented. There's the law, there's our rights, and then there's self-preservation.

I agree with Deanimator.

In Texas we don't have to declare, unless you are asked for ID,but as a matter of courtesy I don't see anything wrong with it. But, making it a law is a really bad idea. When a LEO pulls you over he checks your plates and knows you have a concealed carry permit before he exits his cruiser..

Hope you are only talking about Texas...because its not that way in WA.

You are dead wrong

If a license holder is carrying a handgun on or about the license
holder’s person when a magistrate or a peace officer demands that the
license holder display identification, the license holder shall display
both the license holder’s driver’s license or identification
certificate issued by the department and the license holder’s handgun
license. A person who fails or refuses to display the license and
identification as required by this subsection is subject to suspension
of the person’s license as provided by Section 411.187.

If you don't know what you are talking about..... you shouldn't

I agree. You must inform, only thing that changed in the law is they dropped the penalty.

DON'T TELL

I would not call it a re run..........
It is amazing that so many people on this sight voice thier opinion on how they feel LEO steps on thier rights regarding producing a CCW when they are not requiered to.

I thought it was refreshing to talk to a local officer who respects our rights.

Yet insted people here are knocking it. Would you rather hear more of the law abiding LEO then ones who are not?

No one is trying to dog on your post, it's just that this debate has happened over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over

This certainly was not posted as a debate! It was posted as a fact of a actual conversation that took place.

It was'nt even posted as a question!

Just posted it that some LEO out there do follow the law and don't step on the rights of law abiding citizens!

So if anyone wants a debate go to the threads that posted it to be a debate.:eek:

I too live in the AG state of CT... I too have several LEO friends and family.. Every one of them does not want to know who has what... So @the OP I know where you're coming from at least in this state it's no debate. Although most of the LEO's in this state respect our right, and what we went through to exercise it. We do have some that are better off not knowing anything as they are as AG as the state is.

Nice to know there's 1 more in the state that's CCW friendly.

Sadly...that right there makes it a privilege and not a right...

But, I'm glad your police force is a step above the rest that feel entitled to be notified.

Dude, you need to get laid. You are wound up waaaaay too tight.

My point is that we have a long experience on this forum of any post regarding informing the police you are armed starting the same debate again .

Regardless of your intent it will happen in this thread too.

I'm glad to hear that your buddy the cop respects your rights.

GLAD to hear that your friend has RESPECT for our rights, thanks for sharing it with us. New Mexico is not a must inform state, they will see you have a permit when the run your license. I have heard both good and bad reports about informing or not informing a LEO when being stopped. I am sure it truly depends on the LEO and how they see things, I would hope that most if not all would see it like your friend. I have a few LEO friends, I have not asked them how they feel, maybe time to do so.

IF I have a gun in my vehicle that is accessible, I will inform, and I will do that by including my CCW License with my DL when I hand my DL, registration, insurance info to them. If my gun is in my vehicle gun safe, I probably will not inform. Since my vehicle allows me the same privacy rights as my home, and if my gun were in my vehicle's gun safe and not immediately accessible, then to me it is not important in the moment. I have yet to run to my local PD and let them know what's in my home or what's in my gun safe there, so it's kind of the same, LOL. Not meant to insult anyone about it, just is what it is in similarities. I might learn to handle it differently at some point in time, but until then, I will handle it that way.
