Survival skill challenge (low impact)

festus

God Bless Our Troops!!!
OK here is the plan...GO CAMPING...GET OUT AND DO SOMETHING...it is a great way to teach the wife and kids with out being a survival wacko dad...

I want to go camping again but may wait until fall. I hate camping in hot weather. Can't even enjoy a nice fire. I realize when the balloon goes up I will not have the choice of seasons but I can't bring myself to camp in hot weather if I do not have to. The older I get the more I hate hot weather. Bad state of affairs for someone in Texas.

Heat or no heat, I'll be out with the family this weekend camping. The weather is supposed to suck though so that may be interesting. 90's by day, storms by night... ICK

Plenty of room up here, HK!

What's with you guys and 'Baloons Going Up'? I don't get that...

You are MUCH more likely to have a natural disaster, Hurricane, Tornado, Flood, Dust bowl,
Or something man made, Chemical Spill or Economic disaster like the great depression,

Than any 'Military Action' or 'Hippie Overthrow' or whatever...

Now, Camping is a VERY good idea!
Some place you can teach bush craft and camp craft,
Let the kids get creative with shelter or find easier ways to set up a camp.

Show how you can use empty cans for everything from cups to cooking to making usable utensils.

Show them how to drive a nail and remove it so you don't leave anything behind (and the nail can be reused in an emergency situation).

Show them how to make a hammock so they don't have to sleep on the ground,
And show them the hammock makes a pretty good fish net,
Or when strapped up high and has some leaves thrown up on it, shade/privacy screen when angled towards the ground has has leaves or brush on it.

Show them how to build fish traps so they don't need hook & line...

Show them how a zip lock bag works as flotation, canteen, dry storage, even a pillow, ect.

Good stuff for everyone to learn if they think they might have to forage for their dinner!

Never hurts to get them away from video games, cell phones and internet and get them 'Centered' on what has to be done in a community to keep things working...

O.K. you don't like the phrase when the balloon goes up. How about when the crap hits the fan?

Civil war reference concerning artillery spotting balloons. Troops new a battle was about to take place when the artillery spotting balloon went up on it's tether.
Also a reference to the song 99 red balloons by the German singer NINA

AR,
You, Festus, myself and a few others are probably ready to go if and as needed, and have the training or background to thrive in a "survival situation".

I see this type of thread as a reminder to those who have the background and both encouragement and online lessons for those who don't have our training or background. Please share this view and continue to share your tips and experience in this light.

As for phrasing things as regarding military action / hippie overthrow, I live on the NW coast of Florida and when the Emergency Management folks talk about hurricanes, floods,or bad weather, the general attitude is "It won't happen here"(That's why so many stayed in New Orleans). Posting the situation as a takeover situation seems to get some people's attention.

I did not know the history of the phrase. Thanks for posting it.

I just like banging around in the boonies. Raised in a bend of the White River, I hunted, fished, trapped for extra money as a kid,
We don't try and 'Battle' mother nature, we just take what she offers, which is usually MORE than you need if you pay attention!

I won't eat bugs (Except then riding motorcycles!) and I had to eat an ant in survival school to pass the course... Didn't want to, but did...

Otherwise, I like MEAT!
And there has never been a shortage around me when others 'Can't Find Anything', and I don't get that!

Bush Craft and Camp Craft are being polluted by 'Camp Trailers',
And you can't find people energetic enough to find rocks for a campfire ring anymore...
Since they don't cook EVERYTHING over a camp fire, they don't know about having tall and medium and short stones around the fire for getting food closer or farther away from the fire,

All fire pits are ROUND, now...
They don't know about 'Key Hole' fires so you have an ember bed to cook over while having tall open flame in the 'Eye' for heat/light...

I cooked biscuits in a dutch oven and the folks there said they had NO IDEA why that dutch oven lid had suck a big rim on it...
And they had owned it for 12 years!

The woman was in here late 40s and had no idea how to make biscuits or bread from scratch!
They had been driving 12 miles for 'Showers', they had a camp site (Primitive) but had a hotel room 12 miles away they had been using for showers instead of washing out of a pan or bucket at the camp site...

Interesting people these city folks!
