I think in a grid-down, SHTF, worst case scenario the only way to survive all the contingents that may arise is to be a part of a group. A group of like-minded, well prepared people that is. It'll be pretty hard to defend all of your stuff against a gang of 10-20 people who are armed, and aim to do you harm to get your stuff. You would have to be REALLY good, or the bad guys REALLY sh!tty for one or two people to survive a rush or ambush.
