SU-16 question

I'm moving and will be spending some time at my folks house in Calif,but not moving there because of their restrictive gun laws. Since I'm transporting all my firearms,I would like to stay within the law. I have a Kel Tec SU-16C and was told on this forum that it is considered an assault weapon because it can be fired with the stock folded. Kel Tec has the SU-16 CA that is supposed to be legal since it can't be fired folded. I thought about buying another stock,but I'd rather not buy one since I want to get their Pistol Grip AR Stock Adapter w/ Collapsible Stock once they become available again. My question is, does anyone know if my C model can be modified to a CA model without much trouble, and would it be legal in CA? Sorry bout the long post

Your first assumption is correct (Kel-Tec SU-16 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia), but there may be more. CA DOJ has an "approved list," at least for handguns, and their "assault weapons" ban prohibits more than two "scary" features (my quotes key is getting a workout here) on a single gun. Some features are detachable magazine, pistol grip, muzzle device, folding/extended stock. So you'd be advised to do extensive research — first to see if the SU-16 is banned by name, then to see what's considered a "scary feature," then to see if your rifle has too many of these. The built-in bipod is probably one, I bet. CA is a beautiful state with an extremely difficult government and LE that will not cut you slack, so do your research — and good luck.

I'm still interested to see if their KSG passes muster in CA. Anytime a gun company can get a mean-looking tactical zombie-killer past the gatekeepers I applaud.

You are going to have one heck of a time getting your guns through Canada. It takes prior written approval for each weapon. Even after the approval the agent at the border can revoke that approval. You can ship from yourself to yourself via common carrier (i.e. FedEx) without going through an FFL. You can send them to yourself in care of a friend but make sure the friend does not open the box as this can be considered an unlawful transfer. I have read the federal law on this, I suggest you do the same. I am not an attorney, I do not play one on TV, and I did not stay at a Holliday Inn last night.

If you are going to fly you need only ship the weapons that CA has a problem with. I wouldn't want to tempt fate in CA especially if I was flying. If you decide to carry your weapons through Canada I suggest you arrive at customs early in the day at each end, you might be there for a bit. I stopped and talked to a Canadian Customs Agent on one trip a couple years back. Very pleasant man, I almost had a seizure when he described the process. That is when I researched the ship to yourself option. Also anything made from wild critters i.e. ivory, furs, etc. If you have time go inside the customs building they have a impressive display of items they have taken. Any museum would love to have this stuff.

I won't drive through Canada since handguns are outlawed. I'm going to use the ferry system and ride it all the way to WA state.

The SU-16 isn't listed as a assault weapon, since it has a folding stock it is banned. I did order the pistol grip folding stock since they started producing them again,but will wait to install it till I'm away from CA. Found out my FNH Five Seven is banned since the clip capacity accepts more than 10 rounds. I will look and see if I can find a clip that only holds 10 rounds or less. I haven't spent a lot of time going over Link Removed,but will need to do more research soon. I would recommend anyone traveling to or living there to do some research before arriving. Still waiting to hear back from Kel Tec,will call them again Monday am.

Sheesh. Maybe you need to consult a California attorney. I' be surprised if your Five SeveN isn't banned outright (regardless of magazine capacity) because it shoots "cop killer" bullets. You should look into joining a shooting club. I understand you get a few concessions that way.
