Striker or hammer fired

Which do you prefer?

I switch between a P226/P938 and G26 and tell you the truth, I don't know what the practical (in-use) difference is. Both send bullets down the barrel just fine for me.

Between my wife and I we have 3 hammer fired and 2 striker fired pistols. I can't say I have a preference either way. My daily carry pistol is a striker fired, I carry it because it is the easiest to shoot and conceal plus being a 45 I feel more comfortable with the stopping power. My wife carries a Sig P938 again due to the ease of conceal and comfort level shooting.

Only thing I find different about carrying a hammer vs a striker; is the strikers are usually smoother and protrude less into my side. Is it a bother? Not really.. I switch between a 229, 1911, Glock 19, and Glock 22. Operation is similar in all cases so for me it's the external features that make the difference.

Shoot both. Both have things I like. Everyday carry is SR40C, my favorite gun is a 6" 586 s&w pre lock version. But, a 6" gun is not practical for conceal carry. I do like my Ruger thought.

I've used both. Both allow the firearm to work properly. Both send the round where it should.

I'm not sure why there would be a preference between these two with a semi-auto.

If someone can explain why they like one over the other, please do. I never got this debate. Usually, it ends up turning into a Glock vs. 1911 debate rather than a debate on the benefits of a firing pin from a hammer vs. striker fire.

The striker is basically a hammer & firing pin in one. Most operate similarly to a lightened Double Action. Cycling the slide partially pre-cocks the striker, and the trigger pull finishes cocking the striker before releasing it to fire the round. Some pistols have the striker pre cocked only a small to moderate amount and are much like DAO in a traditional hammer & firing pin pistol. Others almost fully pre-cock the striker and are much like SA in a hammer & firing pin pistol. Others yet have striker mechanisms that are much like DA/SA.

Your Sig on the other hand is a DA/SA. These pistols fire the first round Double Action, and all following shots are fired single action. They generally use a decocking lever to safely lower the hammer, but block contact with the firing pin so the chambered round is not fired.

I prefer external SA/DA. (such as the P226) I have yet to find a striker fired pistol with a nice crisp trigger pull, I really don't love the glock trigger, and putting the safety in the middle of the trigger is like putting the brakes in the center of an accelerator. When I find a striker fired pistol with a short crisp trigger that breaks like an external hammer does in SA mode, I'll certainly add it to my collection. One thing I'll give the Glock and other striker fired pistols is they do tend to have lower bore axis then SA/DA pistols do.....
