State Trooper

Well me and the wife went out of town this morning to have Sunday supper at her mothers. I was headed back home this evening and I got blue lighted by a State Trooper. I was like man what is the deal I was not speeding or anything as I was watching him approach my truck I rolled down my window and then put both my hands firmly on the steering wheel he said sir do you know why I pulled you over I stated no sir I do not he then stated that one of my trailer lights was out. I informed him even though it is not required here in TN that I had a Handgun Carry Permit and that both me and my wife were carrying. I handed the officer our Permits DL Insurance and vehicle registration. I then sat there with the wife for a few minutes why the State Trooper ran all our information. The State Trooper walks up and says nice sticker you have there in your rear window which was a NRA sticker and then he said sir Thank You for letting me know that you and your wife were carrying sidearms even though you are not required too. I then said sir you are very welcome and Thank You for the Service that you do. He merely stated sir I wish you and your wife a good evening you are free to go drive safely. He did not write a Ticket and was very Professional. Just wanted to share.

I've been stopped several times and gotten the same treatment. Never told them about my gun, they never asked. And shouldn't this be posted along with the 100's of other traffic stop posts in LEO Encounters?

And, just for good measure....

I would suggest that your next post, ITCH, should be about ignoring "no guns" signs posted by a private business. I think it's time for Boxxy :-)

Thanks for sharing this Positive Experience. You handled yourself perfectly IMHO.

Thanks for sharing it seem like that a lot of peoples that have been stop are getting the same treatment and I think that the officers know what kind of times we all are living in. Awesome post and thanks.

You're fortunate you encountered one of the good ones. In my experience, for every 1 good, there are 2 bad. Just my $.02

Thanks for sharing! Being old has it's benefits. I stopped an MP on patrol while I was on Fort Bliss. I asked if he knew why I stopped him, and when he said no, I said "see how do you like it!" He got a good laugh from that. My soldier/daughter is convinced I'll be shot someday soon.

Holy crap, I had to check the address bar and date to see if I was looking at /b/ 4 or 5 years ago...

Seeing a Boxxy Babe reference on a gun website.... made me laugh very hard...

I've had interaction with probably 20 good officers over the years and 1 bad. What I find interesting, though, is we pass by how many people in a day? Hundreds. How many criminals who attack us do we meet? Hopefully, none, but in most decent places maybe one or two in our entire lives? For 99.9% of the people on this forum it is perfectly acceptable and encouraged for us to carry a firearm for protection against the one or two criminal persons we might meet in our lifetime. But the minute someone mentions taking actions to protect oneself from a bad police officer (such as the suggestion to not volunteer any information not required to by law to provide), they are labelled by some of those members of this forum as being a "cop basher".

Years ago was on my motorcycle (full dress long-haul, quiet and smooth) - one rainy evening. There was a long string of cars following some slow jerk. Hilly terrain, so only sproadic opportunities to pass. So gradually I passed 2-3 cars at a time and soon was right on this guy's bumper. Long straight, but solid yellow in my lane - wanted to pass SOooo bad, could have been around him in 1/2 a second.... But held off due to the yellow line. Crested the hill, dashed yellow now, and "squirt" i was around him. Settled in at 62 (in a 55)... Few minutes later I see this guy right behind me! Wondering if he as a ... YEP, red and blues in the grill! Flashing. Oh Sh**... Pulled over, took off the helmet to show him I wasn't no long-haired tattooed badass biker. This was long before CHLs were a glimmer in anyone's eyes. But he sat there a long time, then came up. Said I was going a bit quick, and identified himself as aTHREE-COUNTY SUPERVISOR for the Texas Highway Patrol. WTF? What's a 3-county super doing out in a clapped out (man was it knocking bad) undercover car. Unmarked... and at 21:00?? Took my DL, came back again in a bit, and handed it back, wrote a warning, and sent me on my way. hearing how that car knocked, I prolly could'a out run it easy. Followed him into the next town, where he met up with TWO regular partol cars.

Hmmm.. would not have been a good idea to run! Later on as I approached another town, there was a roadblock. 5-6 VERY beefy troopers, all 6'5" and 250, with 12-guages and 6-cell flashlights attached, beaming into the sky like searchlights.... Then there was a flashlight in my eyes - glanced over just a fraction to see if a 12-guage was attached - it wasn't, thank God. They waved me right through. Other end of town another roadblock, this one a LOT less intimidating. One of the locals there told me there was an escaped convict from NM in the area, murder rap... If you see a hitchhiker stay clear so he don't push you off the bike, and when out of sight, call us... Pucker factor was still up there!! Sounded like a wine cork coming out of the bottle when I got off that seat.

Got where I was going with no other issues. Found out from a buddy in the DPS that supervisor first verified the right guy was on that bike, then radioed ahead so they would expect me at a certain time...he was actually doing me 2 favors - no ticket, and making sure I was expected at certain places and certain times.

I've had two recent similar situations. First one was pulled over by a local officer who claimed my license plate was expired. It was for an old vehicle but was transfered to a new car I was driving as proven by the registration sticker on the window. Which when the officer saw it took a double take as he was asking me for my license and insurance card. I handed him both licenses, and insurance card and advised him that I did not have any weapons in the car. He thanked me immediately and returned to his vehicle to check the accuracy of his data versus the sticker on my vehicle. On his return he again was polite and apologized for interruping my evening and explained that his computer screen did not show the transfer on page 1 but on page 2 it did. He then thanked me for being upfront with the CHL license and commented that he wished more would be forth coming as his job is dangerous and he knows he can trust the CHL people -- which I found quite complimentary and not expected.

The second incident was while traveling over the speed limit. I was due a ticket, I admited I was above the speed limit and that I had no excuse but was simply not paying attention. I produced both licenses again, the officer relaxed handed me back the CHL and thanked me. He returned not with the $200 ticket but a warning and thanking me for allowing him to be at ease knowing that if I was that upfront and honest I couldn't be a bad guy and a warning was most certainly a thank you for making him feel more comfortable.

Too often we give the locals or state police a bad rap, but like they say, 20% of the bad apples can spoil the entire bunch.

Very nice post. Most Law Enforcement Officers are gentleman, if treated respectfully. And they do appreciate any information pertaining to their safety.
I can assure you I being on the other end always appreciated cooperation by the motorist.
Remember LEO's are human beings and like to be treated as you do, I know their are some bad apples in the ranks, but hey that's human nature.

Sounds like you need to start a Poll if your going to start inventing % of people numbers. Go start a Poll and see how many feel an officer should be notified no matter what the law requires and how many don't. Before becoming a Military Police officer I used to think like a bad a$$ and screw the man and all that macho bull $hit. Now I choose to respect the man and go above and beyond what is required by the law. My Choice. I want the cops in my small town to know I'm one of the good guys who is more than willing to cooperate and notify.
As for the one or two times you may encounter a "Bad Guy". Same reason I wear a helmet when I ride, same reason I have car and medical insurance.
I don't know if your a cop basher or not, I just wonder where that chip on your shoulder came from. A good number of your posts are combative and negative in nature. You come off as the opposite of what a concealed carry individual is supposed to be. Maybe we need a poll for that as well.

I guess this guy "think(s) like a bad a$$ and screw the man and all that macho bull $hit." :

I believe you just proved my point. Such a vehement response you offered to the simple statement of, "There is no real need to tell the police of objects that are in your legal possession unless required to by law."

Good story, good cop. Just FYI though, it'd be a lot easier to read if you used some punctuation lol.
