State Trooper Trusted Me

So I'm over the line out on the Navajo reservation and an Arizona State Trooper pulls me over for 82 in a 65 - which was weird since I had the speed control set on 78 - but hey, either way, he's got me. When he comes up I hand him my license, registration, insurance and Concealed Carry Card and tell him I have a baby Glock in my pommel bag on the center consul but its not chambered. Then I asked him what he wanted to do. He smiled and said, "Leave it there, you're not going to shoot me are you?"

Wound up having a great conversation about some stuff we had in common and lucked out with a written warning instead of the standard $50 ticket for speeding on the rez.

No problem for him.

It's good to hear about another nice interaction so thanks for sharing. But keep that thing chambered! It won't shoot itself, trust me, I own one too!

I have always informed the officer any time i have had to interact on a professional level. I have not had a bad experience yet. Most cops are relieved that you are up front and obviously not a threat if you are being open about who you are and what you are doing. I too have had conversations that ranged from what are your carrying and how do you like it ...to...wow who would have thought that you were packing...I did not notice a print or limp...good job!

I've been pulled over more than once and only gotten verbal warnings. No mention of the firearm I was carrying or my CPL by either me or the officer.... funny how that works. One time I was stopped for 50+ in a 35. Officer asked me to step out of the vehicle after he ran my license. Well, heck.... I have this gun openly carried in a holster on my hip, but I can't leave it in the vehicle because of my wife and children in the car without CPLs... officer is already walking back to between our vehicles. Oh well. I exit vehicle, Taurus PT-145 stainless on my belt in a holster, fully visible. Officer never says anything about the gun, just said that he didn't want to lecture me in front of my family, but I really needed to slow down. Verbal warning, no ticket.

I don't mention my gun... more chance the officer won't either. I see no need to tell them about any lawfully carried OBJECT, unless required to by law.

Here we go again, with the same old argument. I think it is amazing how many people feel the need to congratulate an officer for not making an issue about a lawfully possessed object that they just can't resist telling the officer about (N/A in states that require notification by law, of course.)

No clue about Arizona notification. I do it as a courtesy. I was LEO in two cities as a young man. My brother just retired from over 25 years as a LEO. My other brother, now deceased, was LEO. There's LEO all through my family tree. It ain't me against them...I am them too.

On the chambered round...weird when I think about it. Never have had a problem with a fully loaded revolver. Still a tad hinky about pistols. Learning curve. Know they have plenty of safety features and it'd be damned difficult to drive and load a round at the same time. But, the rez ain't like gangland. More like the analogy I like of having a tool handy. So maybe I just need to get used to having a chambered round.

As the encounter sinks in I am most impressed with the trooper's ease being around an armed citizen.

Hey, he might not have noticed it. I was talking to a cop a while ago and open carry came up, he goes..."Do you carry?" And I pointed at my hip and said something like "I am right now" or "at all times" and he freaked. Good thing to leave it be if its not brought up. If notification isnt required, its probably better to never bring it up unless directly asked about weapons.

When I was stopped in Louisiana for 10 over, I handed over my DL and CWP. The officer asked if I was carrying and I said I was, how would he like to proceed? He jokingly said,"If you don't go for yours, I won't go for mine." He gave me the citation and we went on our way.

The exact same thing has happened to me on numerous occasions, I have not reached for my gun and the officer did not reach for his. Neither one of us mentioned anything at all about guns or permits. About 50% of the occasions there was no citation involved, either.

This issue has been debated and debated and debated and debated and debated---------------------. As I recently said on another thread all the times I have been pulled over in Washington State(not required to notify State) I have not EVER felt the need to tell the cop I was carrying. It only complicates things and being pulled over by a cop is something I want to be done with ASAP. Once I was open carrying my 44 mag during a traffic stop and nothing was said. And Ive been lucky, no tickets (knock on wood) so far. Mrs SANTA wasnt as lucky, she got a seat-belt ticket, trust me that aint cheap. And Navy Ill get back to you tonite.

I only notify where it's law to do so. Thats usually the response I get. Only place I had to allow them to disarm me was in New Orleans. I didn't like it, but spending time in a cell while they looked for a legal/trumped up, reason to keep me there was a less attractive option. If not required to notify, then I don't.

Here in the Bluegrass State (no notification required) when a LEO runs your DL or plates, he or she will be told if the owner has a CCL by dispatch. I personally prefer that the news comes from me rather than his radio that I may be armed. Never had an issue going that way. YMMV.

Ouch, that's a cheap shot. He'd, or you'd, be wrong figureing that. Been in three legit fire fights - one with rifle, two with service revolvers. LEO x2, USMC, underground miner, worked locked psych units - multiple take downs a shift, worked state prison, federal prison (including max psych) and rolled 5 years with fire dept crisis wagons. Ain't scared of much of anything....

Do feel stupid defending my courage to a stranger on line....

On the way back to Virginia from Ohio, I was pulled over by an Ohio Highway patrol officer to ask me some questions concerning a possible accident I might have witnessed and during the initial conversation I told him I had a CCW and all he said was, “thank you for informing him”, then he just went about asking me about the accident and I let him know what I saw he thanked me again and off I went. Not all LEO’s are heavy handed where it comes to CCW’s and it’s good to see one with his head screwed on right.

I had a similar experience.

I am not sure why people on this forum feel it is necessary to challenge every poster who tells of a similar experience and notifies up front even when not required. I don't think the intent of the OP was to debate whether he should or should not have notified. It seems to happen on every post like this. As someone said, it has been debated on this forum many times...

I've lived in Arizona for 40 years now. Often worked closely with LEOs. EVEN if notification is not required I dang sure don't want a LEO to discover I'm armed. I much prefer to notify. Since almost anyone can carry concealed in Arizona now I'm guessing most LEOs expect whoever they're dealing with to be packin'.

Yeah, I'm pro cop. Been one, both grandfathers were, two brothers were too. Just common courtesy.

Too bad Lanza wasn't aborted...his mother and a lot of other good people would still be alive and he'd be as dead as he is now...
