State to state carry question

I have an IN ccp and traveling through 2 states in the next few months that don't honor my state license. What is the legal way to carry it through. In my suitcase, unloaded in the trunk? with the ammo in another bag? Also one of the states is where I'm staying for a few days. Definitely not leaving it in the hotel room when I go out but I really don't want to leave it in the trunk when I'm sightseeing.
Edited to add: If I break it down and carry it in my backpack is that concealed carry? With no ammo?
Thanks,

Typically, it is enough to separate the gun and the ammo in different storage bags in your trunk. Despite this, I always follow the rule of calling the state authorities there and double checking how they want me to handle. Make sure to write down the information you are given and if there is any question at least you have a reference. Since you really shouldn't expect anyone to be checking your bags though, it shouldn't be a problem.

In some states, even if your gun is secured in your home in IN, you are still in for a **** storm of harassment from the state gestapo... Ask the FL man that had his family terrorized and his vehicle and contents aggressively searched on the side of a Maryland interstate.... and the reason for the unlawful search, his gun, in his gun safe, in his home in Florida.

There are a number of states, mostly in the NE, I will not visit as the constitution is null and void there.

It would help to know the states you intend to visit. Are you comfortable sharing this?

Reason: While a state may not recognize your CCP, there are sometimes provisions in state law that allow you to carry in your car with a license from your home state. PA and IL come to mind.

Going to the south by way of WV and SC both of which do not honor my permit.

What authorities would I contact, the state attorney general?

Plenty of info on Handgunlaw.us. Click on both states from the main map and you'll find plenty of information, including links to the statutes for each state.

Getting good answers from those in "authority," believe it or not, can be hit-or-miss.

This is good...thanks apvbguy

I follow the safe passage provision of FOPA and use a metal gun case with a steel cable to anchor also combination lock instead of a key.

This looks to be in full compliance.

Is staying overnight in a hotel an extention of my residence? (Need info) If so, anchoring the metal case in the room would appear to be better than going to breakfast with firearm in the vehicle.

This deals with the "Where are you coming from and where are you traveling to?" question.

sinful nature is always hostile to God....

once you stay within a state while using the FOPA free transit law all bets are off

You have THE RIGHT as a citizen of the United States to be able to travel with firearms. Traveling thru states by automobile as long as the firearms are unloaded and locked and the ammo is in a separate section locked. I would not suggest leaving them in your auto overnight and I wouldn't suggest taking them with you while you're sightseeing in a State that you don't have retropocity I would leave it in your hotel room (chain it to something that can't be removed so easily) I don't know if you have seen what has been happening with 2 different cases in NJ one with a woman who traveled with her firearm from Pennsylvania and the other was a gentleman traveling from North Carolina with the Telephone repair during Hurricane Sandy and he forgot he had a pistol and when he pulled into a parking lot to take a nap, a NJ cop investigated and he told the cop "he was called up in the middle of the night to travel from North Carolina to New Jersey to help) the cop couldn't give a **** he booked him for having an illegal firearm. So be careful when traveling to Neo-Nazi States I live in the king of them all The disgusting State of New York. So I understand having evil all around me from NYC to NJ, CT the whole Tri-State area is hell bent on making people who believe in the 2nd Amendment's life miserable but we will keep fighting and maybe one day we might actually win.
