I was at an indoor shooting range today and got pretty excited when they said they had an XDm in 40 caliber I could rent. They guy behind the counter then discovered that it's 'down for maintenance'. Ok, maybe they meant cleaning? Then I saw they had one in 45 ACP. That was even better! As the guy pulls the mag from the gun to place it in the box for me, we notice an odd rattling in the mag. I suggested that he pull the mag apart and find out what was making noise, you know, before I go and shoot it! Turns out it was a piece of the slide rail that busted off and fell in the mag!!!! So now that's 2 XD pistols down for maintenance. One of the other guys behind the counter thought that it was the result of someone not rotating the takedown leaver down before dropping the slide on reassembly. I checked out a youtube vid, and this seems reasonable, but has anyone out there busted their XD due to improper reassembly procedure, or is this a durability/usage issue?
I did get to shoot a standard 45 XD and feel that it's got a lot going for it, if you don't break the dang slide on reassembly!
