Spokane woman holds alleged burglar at gunpoint

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Spokane Police said a woman helped them catch a burglar early Wednesday.
Witnesses called police around midnight to report a break in at a business on North Pittsburgh. They watched Sean M. Denny, 35, take off on foot without a shirt.
Around 15 minutes later, the woman called police to report Denny kicked in her back door near East Dalton. The woman, who asks not to be identified, tells KREM 2 she was brutally awoken by the noise of Denny breaking into her home.
“I told him I was armed. He kept coming, so I started backing up,” she said.
The woman says her first reaction was to grab her gun.
She told dispatchers she grabbed her gun and fired one round. It did not hit Denny. When they arrived, they found the woman holding him at gunpoint in her living room.
“He laid on the couch. I stood there for a very short period of time. I asked him, ‘Did I hit you?’ There was no response. No movement. So I made my way to the telephone and dialed 911.”
Denny tried to run from the scene, but police caught him and took him into custody. They said he was the same suspect responsible for the original burglary call.
Police said the homeowner was in reasonable fear for her life, fired her gun to protect herself, and clearly was within her legal right to do so. Spokane Police Officers stayed on scene with the victim until her son arrived to help secure her house.
“You have to be prepared for anything. You don’t get do-overs. You can’t ask for a time out, so just do what you need to do,” the woman said.
Denny was arrested for one count of 2nd Degree Burglary, one count of Residential Burglary, and Resisting Arrest. Denny was booked into the Spokane County Jail on his charges after being treated at a local hospital for his minor injuries.
