SPOKANE, Wash. -- Spokane Police said a woman helped them catch a burglar early Wednesday.
Witnesses called police around midnight to report a break in at a business on North Pittsburgh. They watched Sean M. Denny, 35, take off on foot without a shirt.
Around 15 minutes later, the woman called police to report Denny kicked in her back door near East Dalton. The woman, who asks not to be identified, tells KREM 2 she was brutally awoken by the noise of Denny breaking into her home.
“I told him I was armed. He kept coming, so I started backing up,” she said.
The woman says her first reaction was to grab her gun.
She told dispatchers she grabbed her gun and fired one round. It did not hit Denny. When they arrived, they found the woman holding him at gunpoint in her living room.
“He laid on the couch. I stood there for a very short period of time. I asked him, ‘Did I hit you?’ There was no response. No movement. So I made my way to the telephone and dialed 911.”
Denny tried to run from the scene, but police caught him and took him into custody. They said he was the same suspect responsible for the original burglary call.
Police said the homeowner was in reasonable fear for her life, fired her gun to protect herself, and clearly was within her legal right to do so. Spokane Police Officers stayed on scene with the victim until her son arrived to help secure her house.
“You have to be prepared for anything. You don’t get do-overs. You can’t ask for a time out, so just do what you need to do,” the woman said.
Denny was arrested for one count of 2nd Degree Burglary, one count of Residential Burglary, and Resisting Arrest. Denny was booked into the Spokane County Jail on his charges after being treated at a local hospital for his minor injuries.

I get so damn sick of the "alleged" BS, the guy was caught red handed, nothing alleged about it. Same thing when video clearly show the perp committing a crime, but it is still "alleged".

Too bad she didn't hit him with that shot. At least she wasn't afraid to do what she had to do. She stopped the sucker... :o)

Another women willing to take charge of her protection, willing to make the necessary decisions that will terminate the threat of harm. Those that are willing to take this kind of stand can only be a positive model of what more need to do for themselves.

Lol what a polite homeowner. "Did I hit you?" Good on her for doing what she had to but personally I would have put four or five rounds COM the first time he didn't stop when ordered. None of this one shot and "Did I hit you?" crap. If he's not on the ground bleeding or obeying commands or running out the door, I'm still shooting. In WA when defending your home, all that's needed for lethal force to be authorized is felonious intent and under state law 1st degree burglary (armed) and 2nd degree burglary (unarmed) are both felonies.

He's lucky he wised up and started listening after the first shot. Wouldn't have been that lucky with me.

All excellent posts. My thoughts are he got off pretty easy. Most would have dropped him and fired until threat was over. I mean really over!
