Councilmen Brown should realize , people dont get their permits to do a police officers job, we get them to protect first and foremost ourselves and our family .

I think that city coucilman should get to meet this federal judge. He and this sheriff could be "study buddies"!

"A federal judge has lambasted an Iowa sheriff for denying a gun permit to an outspoken government watchdog and anti-abortion advocate whom some in the area considered “weird.”

It was wrong for Osceola County Sheriff Douglas Weber to deny Paul Dorr of Ocheyedan a permit to carry a concealed weapon three years ago, according to a court ruling issued Wednesday.

U.S. District Judge Mark Bennett also ordered Weber to successfully complete a court-approved course on the U.S. Constitution within five months."

From the article:

County Councilman Brown says law enforcement get more hours of training when it comes to weapons and they should be the ones protecting citizens.

Sounds like exactly the same thing some members of this forum post.

Yes, and when seconds count, law enforcement are (several) minutes away. What good would they have been in that situation, except to wipe up the blood?

I'd bet that many CCers spend more time on the ranges than the police do.

LOL You`re exactly right NavyLCDR!

This councilman is a lawyer and is about as inept in his law practice as he is as an "elected" official.
There IS hope for him though ..... I hear there is a senate seat coming open in the home state (we won`t mention) of one of those forum members you referred to. He would fit right in there!

Welcome to Spartanburg. We have an awesome Sheriff, and at least one moronic councilman. Well, we'll see how well he does in the next election.

Great. I can move to a great state like SC. Lots of nice people. I won't have to get a permit. I'll just apply for one of the new LEO opportunities that the councilman will provide. I am over 50 but what the h.... BTW I'll take the Waffle House beat!:sarcastic:

We DO have a great sheriff rrman! Unfortunately, we have our share of morons from the MAYOR on down the line.

Don't be too hard on Councilman Brown. He's just upset that he lost two votes. One behind bars and the other barking in.....

Speaking of training for a CWP......

But this was Cherokee county which is right next door to Spartanburg.

Hope the citizens do remember when election time comes. People like him have no place in today's problematic society.

Seen that in the news yesterday also. The exact kind of publicity we don't need. What an idiot.

Agreed about the instructor who tried to cut corners, but what about all the CWP holders who the article says are now subject to the same perjury charges for not disclosing that their class was less than 8 hours?

From the link:

In addition to Wykel's criminal charges, all of his students that previously applied for and received Concealed Weapons Permits, and have not completed an eight-hour training class are subject to perjury charges under Sec. 16-9-10 for the falsification of the application proces.

Oops. The dude's been certified since 1996. He used to teach Dept. of Corrections personnel. Not sure if their requirements are the same, but it looks like a ton of CWPs are going to get wiped off the books in one fell swoop because of this one idiot.

This is the problem with CWP schemes to begin with. You have to get fingerprinted and questioned as though it is assumed that you have criminal intent, or at the very least, as though carrying a weapon for self-defense makes you more prone to violence than anyone else. Not to mention that you have to pay the state and submit to their authority to grant or deny permission for you to exercise your God-given rights. And if this one idiot was cutting corners to that degree, it's a given that others were/are too, and now undercover cops will be deployed all over your state to act on the extra suspicion the government already has codified into law against CC'ers trying to catch all the instructors and students for perjury charges when the class lasts only 6 or 7 hours instead of 8. This is horrible for CC'ers all across SC, and as with most things that can be couched as a failure in "allowing" citizens to carry, will eventually spread across the country too.

This perjury case may deserve its own thread as it's pretty off-topic here, but I think if CC'ers start getting caught up in it and charged/tried/convicted, a close eye better be kept on the story.
