Soldiers Fun With Flag Draped Coffin Sparks Outrage

I know I have been retired for a long time but there are some things that should remain sacred within the military, especially honoring our fallen brothers. The troops in the photo are part of an Honor Guard who participate in military rites and, from the looks of the picture, they fail to reflect how somber an occasion military funerals are and, in my opinion, are being irreverent by posing for such an outrageous picture. There is no humor that can be associated with a flag draped coffin. It seems that our military is failing to instill pride in the young troops of today. I participated in many military funerals starting with the Korean War and no one would have ever thought of disgracing themselves with such conduct.

I think somebody posted this back when it happened in February because I remember seeing it.

While, I agree that if there had been jocularity around the casket of a fallen soldier this would have indeed been in horrible taste to take the picture for one, and for another thing it would have been incredibly stupid to post on Facebook. If this had been a fallen soldier, then I believe every person in that photo should be disciplined. But this was not the case.

These soldiers were part of a training class and this was a class photo with a training casket. I could see the class taking a group photo to remember one another by. What I really don't get is the posting on Facebook nor their sophomoric behavior while taking a class photo.

I agree, Oldgrunt, the generation of today does not have the same integrity, honor, and set of values we had.

The problem with facebook is that it lets you share all those random thoughts that should never leave the privacy of your mind with the world

I live not far from the largest military mortuary in the world. I can tell you that there are a lot of retired military here. I can also tell you we don't take kindly to this sort of stupidity. We take our military very seriously and the fallen more seriously.
