SOB carry?

No this is not a question as to how some of the more illustrious members carry.

What are your opinions of a small of back carry?

I did some research years ago when I started carrying and came to the personal conclusion that this was not the way to go. I based my decision on the risk of spinal injury that can be cause by having an object on your spine if you fell on your back. Supposedly this is a reason why police officers aren't susposed to have equipment there. Also, when I tried to test draw from that location it seems like I consistantly but inadvertantly ended up pointing the muzzle at some part of my body.

I ask my question because I have seen several references to SOB carrying lately in various threads and i am wondering why. If my conclusion was wrong please let me know.

I usually carry at 1:00, but lately I've been thinking that I might be able to distract a BG (mugger, robber, ect) by saying "take my wallet, leave me alone!". That would give me an excuse to reach for my gun, and return with my sidearm before they knew what hit them!

Not my style

No. I think your conclusion is just about right on. I tried the SOB 6 O'Clock position carry for a short time. Not very comfortable and forget about driving. While the standing/moving around carry at the SOB position is not a bad selection, if you plan on driving or sitting the SOB is a pain in the back. Literally!

The SOB is very on the uncomfortable side when you are sitting. When you bend over I guarantee you will print.

If you have a semi hard cover (jacket or vest or something similar) then the SOB can be a good option for you. If you're covered by a shirt, the normal scenario has both of your hands/arms behind you to effect a draw. One had to raise the shirt, the second to draw the weapon.

When the weapon is extracted you are muzzle down and the wrist is reversed from the firing position. You have to move all the way around your circumference in order to draw a bead on your target. If you get rushed during the draw, your adversary could catch you with both hands behind your back. Not good!

It's like anything else. You need to try it to see if it works for you. My opinions don't mean squat, nor does anyone else.

You need to take in the advise and make your own decision on the type of carry for you.

Post what type of holster you decide on! Best of luck!

I carry at my 8 o clock yes I'm a lefty, this goes with the previous statement with the wallet, very effective... Small of back isn't comfortable while sitting down for long periods or while driving a car... Main reason I don't do it, and the fact it's an awkward draw position as you stated the muzzle is in bad direction

I do have holsters for both of my carry pieces that fit on the small of my back. I do carry there sometimes but like xdmowner I am a lefty and it usually sits closer to the 8 o'clock position. I sit in an actual computer desk chair that has an open space where the SOB position is when I do carry there. I had to adjust the lumbar support on the drivers seat of my Toyota to accommodate the gun. Finally I decided that my small S&W model 36 fit nicely there and that's what I use as my BUG.

Also, if you are going to carry there or anywhere for that matter, drill drill drill. That is really what makes for an effective draw from any position.

You are 100% correct. SOB carry is extremely dangerous. In a SD sitation there is a good chance you could end up in melee range. Falling on a weapon when it hits you in the spinal column has a good chance of causing spinal damage. I like to carry IWB on my strong side at 3:15 or 3:30. It's very concealable under light clothing as the grip will blend with your side/love handle and quite easy to draw or reholster.

I don't like any type of carry that makes it easier for someone behind me to draw my gun than it does for me.

I will not carry an SOB.

SOBs are heavy, annoying, and often loud as well.

I chose to tell the SOB he could freakin' walk. Now I carry a gun instead.

Sob

I happen to like SOB carry for my M&P 357c when off duty. I will often carry it there when clothing do not permit for my serpa but have never carried IWB strong side. I also drill from 6o'clock often and have never been in a melee scrap. I will admit however, that I'd rather carry in a serpa holster strong side (right) with double mags on my left. It comes down to whatever is comfortable for individual.

We're not a big fan of SOB for reasons alluded to here already. You start a fight with one hand behind your back, cant get to the gun if you end up on the ground (and you will), cant get to the gun (easily or quickly) if seated in car/restaurant booth, etc. or pinned up against a wall, risk of spinal injury (I can tell u first hand this hurts even being taken down on a throw mat with a blue gun, much less a paved parking lot), extremely slow presentation from the holster relative to other positions. We'd rather you carry SOB vs not at all, just understand when wading thru all the BS, there are many postiions, just as (if not more) comfortable that afford you quicker/safer access to the firearm.

Since I already have a bad back from rolling a Crown Vic, I cannot imagine carrying at the 6 o'clock position. Not to mention you have your weapon trapped in you hit the ground or while seated.
I do carry at 3o'clock position...

I do a 5 o'clock carry most of the time. Not small of the back, so avoid the "danger" of that, but still a good spot. (I use a holster that holds it "upside down" so that draw is correct.)

I have run a few thousand miles cross country while carrying sob, using a padded holster with the belt on the outside of all. This kept the gun from bouncing or rubbing my hide.
I did practice a lot, usually using just one hand to draw.

I carried SOB for just under 20 years when I carried a lightweight J-frame. My only real problem with it was having to unholster the gun when I was driving and put it in my console.
