Smith and Wesson M&P .40 Compact vs. XD .40 SubCompact

I am going to guy another gun and am between these two. I am just looking for more insight from others as far as a gun for concealed carry. The one thing I like about the XD is the safety that is on it for carrying with one in the chamber. The S&W felt GREAT at the range and I shoot it very well. The XD did not feel as good in my hands, I did not shoot it though. Any comments on these two would be greatly appreciated!!! No wars here!!! Just please post up what you think and especially if you own one or both of these guns!!!

THANKS!

Also, if anyone knows a place to get either one of these for cheap new to Florida that would be appreciated. The best I can find is a shop locally that wants $500 for the XD plus tax and $529 for the M&P plus tax but with a mail in rebate of $50. The online places I have found that are cheaper are out of stock.

i have a full size m&p and love it, but i carry the xd subcompact everyday. both guns will be a good choice. i went with the xd beacuse the m&p compact didnt feel right to me and the xd felt great. the m&p is like a glock, dont pull the trigger and it wont go boom, but the xd safety on the grip and the trigger is a good back up to make sure it wont go off. its all personal choice, but i think both have pro's and con's like any gun will. good luck to you! both guns are great!

Well, here in MA since the D*****BAG we call our Attorney General has this idea that forbidding law abiding firearms owners access to certain guns by not including them on a list of approved firearms makes the world so much safer for everyone, we don't have the ability to buy new Springfield XD models. Springfield decided not to participate in the mandatory testing by not sending along guns to be destroyed for no good reason.

Geeze... Can you tell I'm not happy about that? Grrrrrr...

Anyway. I have both the M&P45 full size (on hip now) and the M&P40c. Love (Yes folks, It's love) Both!!
My friend Steve bought the M&P9 full size on my suggestion and he loves his...

The only issue with all of 3 of them was the 10+lb trigger pull required to (yup you guessed it) pass the MA compliance to be added to the D*****BAG's list... WTF???

Easy fix though. A company named APEX Tactical Welcome to Apex Tactical Specialties, Inc. makes a performance kit that brings the trigger pull to a super smooth and reliable 5 lb pull with minimal take up tension and short reset. All the parts were a perfect fit, installation was simple. For me it was simple, perhaps have a gun smith do it if you're not mechanically inclined or comfortable with the idea... I safety tested the gun before rework and after rework. It will not go bang unless you pull the trigger. I've been carrying the 40 compact all summer with no issues and the .45 I've had for close to a year and trust it in condition 1 for carry.

So with all that wind out of the way, I'd choose the M&P... I am biased as I own 4 S&W firearms so.. Take it for what it is worth..

Peace...

I own both a MP9c and XD40SC. I shoot them both equally well. I carry both in high ride OWB holsters and they conceal well. Both are good quality and you can't go wrong with either. Choose the one that feels right to you.

Thanks for the replies! I am leaning waaaaaay more towards the M&P. Mostly since I shot very well with it and it feels better in my hands than any other gun I have picked up. I also think I will go with the one without the thumb safety. To me it feels like it could get engaged or caught on something if i ever had to draw it quickly. I think that with a good holster it would be as safe as the Glock carrying with one in the chamber.

The manual safety is really not needed in my opinion. I like the just aim and squeeze method for self defense firearm. I noted the same potential for snags or hang ups with the safety installed.

Post some pictures when you get it.

Xd40sc

I have both an M&P 9 Pro and an XD40sc. In the subcompact size, the XD just felt better in my hand than the M&P. Both are terrific guns, highly accurate and reliable. The construction is a little heavier on the XD. That pistol is surprisingly accurate for its size -- no longer than the barrel is, it is very pointable. It does not seem to be at all picky about the ammo I feed it, and I am very comfortable with it as a carry gun. It is just a fraction wider than I would like, but still a nice size.

Good luck with your purchase -- I do not think you can go wrong either way.

I carry a M&P45 and love it using a suppertuck holster from cross breed.I have no problem with it not having a safty I just carryed for a week with no bullets in it but had it set up to dry fire and at the end of the day when I took the gun off to go to bed I would pull the trigger and it would click meaning I didn't shoot my self in the foot that day.:pleasantry:

I have both the full size and the compact M&P 40's. i almost bought the xd sc 40 but it just didn't feel as good in my hands as the M&P does. its a little top heavy to me also but thats JMO. from what i have read its just as reliable as the M&P is. for some reason i'm a better shot at the range with my compact then i am with the full size. best of luck, i'm sure you will be happy with either one.

Well after a ton of researching and holding both in my hands, firing the M&P and going over pros and cons of each I went with the M&P .40 compact. I am 110% happy with this gun. I decided to not even fire the XD just based off how awkward it felt to me in my hands and how nice the M&P felt and how well I shot with it. I am coming from a Glock 26 as my carry weapon and I have to say that gun was a wonderful piece. The finish on it still looks brand spankin new. I never once had a issue with it firing, loading, or ejecting. So time will tell if this will perform as well as my Glock has for me!

+1 on the m&p i have the fullsize and have about 500 rounds or so through it and have never had 1 problem at all. dont even matter what ammo i run in it. hope you enjoy!

I still love this gun over my Glock 26 but a few things that I don't really care for on the M&P...

I can not find anywhere on how to detail strip the gun, the Glock could be detail stripped in the dark no problem.

The finish on the slide of the M&P seems to be much more delicate than the finish on the Glock. I already see a couple tiny blemishes on the M&P and it just feels like it will get scratched up easily. The Glock on the other hand still looks brand new and feels like I could take a wire brush to it and not hurt it one bit.

I took out the firing pin in the M&P just to take a look and found there to be a plastic liner in the slide. I know it's not needed but I like to detail strip and really clean my guns every now and then. I do not know if cleaners with damage this plastic or not. Also, I would think that a little debris in this plastic on plastic set-up that there could possibly be a reliability issue there.

The barrel on the M&P is MUCH thiner than the Glock. I am no scientist or gun expert but I would think that a thicker barrel would equal more durability.

This I think is just a break in issue but a fully loaded mag is difficult to get into the gun on the M&P when the slide is not locked back. Not a big deal but just something I noticed.

Again, I still like this gun much more than the Glock 26, just thought I post up some of my opinions

the only thing that bugged me about mine is it started to pit after just a few months, and the 3 mags i have will rattle when fully loaded. sounds like a round is moving back and forth there for makin a taping sound. cant seem to find out why its doing this. all 3 are factory mags too. other than that no jams, misfires, fte's, nothing. over all im happy. i wanted a glock, but they dont fit my hands well.

Springfield & S&W

At our store we sell the Springfield XD from $459. S&W M&P from $529 and you get the $50 mail in rebate. We also give you an hour free at our indoor pistol range when you purchase a firearm from us. Stop in anytime we will be happy to assist you.

Either one of the guns are great guns to shoot. I personally have an XD and love it. We put the Crimson Trace Laser Grips on it. If you have any questions just give us a call.

The pitting issue is a big issue to me...... Have you heard of this happening to all of them? Have you spoke with S&W about this? And the mag issue kinda sucks too.....

no i have not heard of it affecting all of them, i just wasnt takin the proper steps to avoid the issue, i live in texas and the mosture here sucks ( like florda) so i just saw it as that, but i oil the gun on a regular basis and have solved the issue. also keepin it in a gun sock has worked as well. idk why the mags are actin up, but they feed just fine when shooting and have not had a ftf or anything.

This is going to be my carry weapon so I can't keep it in a sock. I will be sure to wipe the slide down with a gun rag often now though.

glocks are not the best my friend! they have their issues like any other pistol. my sissy will shoot just like ur lame glock would.
