Smart guns--is there a market?

Will smart guns be in our future and mandated by fed govt or are they just someones pipe dream? It seems that they are becoming a reality and may be a threat to our 2A. To me anything that has a computer microchip in it is a danger to privacy and other rights. What are your thoughts? Good idea or bad? For me I 'll stick to the old style, smart guns will have no place in my home.

Yes, There is a Market for Smart Guns (Or at Least There Will Be) | AllOutdoor.com

There's no such thing as a "smart gun", just a smart gun owner who always practices the cardinal gun safety rules and handles/shoots his/her weapon proficiently and accurately. The government and the anti gun crowd will never fathom that sentence.

What ever happened to guns fitted with the "Magna-Trigger"?
It is old tech but it was used mainly(?) on revolvers for the US Marshals I believe.

this is the first time I heard about "Smart Guns". I hope it doesn't come to pass. I would not want to own any.

I've said before... I'll only get a "smart" gun if it works immediately for me and whoever needs to use it, never for someone who shouldn't, and can't be hacked or ever shut off. Might as well add some targeting tech while they're at it. Guided bullets anyone?

I think all politicians who vote for them should be forced to own only that type of gun. And all of them should have dead batteries.

I personally would not want one for myself, and would obviosly be opposed to any legislation requiring them. With that said I can see some situations where they could be an asset. A few months ago there was someone on here looking for help with convincing their wife to allow them to have a pistol for carry and home defense. If I remember correctly he had a special needs child that could not be trusted, and the child's condition made educating the risk of the firearm near impossible. I think he admitted to being occasionally absent minded and forgetful, but didnt think he would be with a gun. His wife was not so sure and thought the risk was to great with their child.

I could see this working for him, as there would be no way the child could fire the weopon (assuming it always worked).

Once again, I mention the Magna Trigger.

The Magna-Trigger Conversion

Smart gun technology affords us gun safety add-ons that can help protect others. Are you seriously concerned about the chance of you or others being slain or injured after an assailant grabs your gun from your "safe" holster or from your hand? This happens to many law enforcement officers each year! Of the injured, many are crippled for life.
Are you a parent concerned that your efforts to protect your family may instead expose your offspring to danger?
Your MODIFIED Smith & Wesson REVOLVER can help prevent these possibilities. Your special magnetic ring allows you instant firing of your gun, while your assailant (or your child finding your gun) will find it impossible to fire it!
Guns have been modified for police since June, 1976. For convenience, all magnetic rings allow firing of all modified guns. The device slides out for easy gun cleaning, and never requires oiling. Only one moving part is employed. The device is expected to outlast your gun by countless years. The powerful samarium magnets can last for centuries. The tiny stainless steel rings never tarnish, and weigh only five grams (1/5 ounce). You wear the ring on your middle finger for the six-shot guns and on the ring finger for the five-shot guns or the Ruger. Most officers wear a ring on both hands.
Gold and Silver rings are available for those whose tastes require fashion jewelry. These custom rings are converted to Magna-Trigger rings by a jeweler that we certify as competent in doing this work. All prices for custom rings are determined on a case-by-case basis.

The above was and might still be used during prisoner transports by the US Marshals Dept.
Now mind you, I am not advocating that something likes should be mandatory for all guns! I only point this out as a feature that CAN be deployed IF the owner wishes, NOT as a requirement!

I saw something about them awhile back. Wouldn't own one myself, and if I remember I also saw that they already had problems with them.

Remember Naeser's Law: "You can make it foolproof, but you can't make it damnfoolproof." Also the wisdom of Chief Engineer Scott: "The more they overtake the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain."

Smart gun? Nein, bitte.
