shotgun choke question

I just purchased a 12 gauge home defense shotgun. It has a fixed choke. What would be involved if I wanted to have the choke removed and the barrel threaded so I could attach an aftermarket breeching choke?

I don't have any direct experience with this, but if your shotgun us a common enough model, it might make more sense to either buy an additional barrel with the choke you desire, or buy one threaded for choke inserts. That being said, I don't know if the kind of choke(s) you want are generally screw-in, or if its just typical hunting/sport shooting chokes.

The first question is; Are you going to do any breeching? Or is it to look kool?
To answer your question, it can be done, reaming the bore (choke area) and threading it for your choke.

Looking cool won't mean much in the middle of the night. You can't see the end of the barrel clearly, and hopefully you haven't backlit yourself so the bad guy won't see it either. Unless you're a CIRT member, or you are tired of your 2 year old locking himself in the bathroom, save your money, or better yet, spend it on ammo. You don't need a "breeching choke" (actually a modified muzzle break) to blow open a door with a 12 gauge shotgun.

I hope you have thick skin, because I'm going to tell you something you may not wish to hear. If you bought a 12 gauge shotgun for home defense, you did well. I own a Benelli M-4 for that purpose. If you bought a 12 gauge shotgun to look cool, or impress your friends, very likely, if you ever have to deploy it, you're going to be horribly ineffective. Have you taken a defensive shotgun course? Do you know how to set up a defensive perimiter in your home? Have you thought about where your kids sleep? Are you prepared for the costs involved when the clean up crew comes into your home to scrub down blood, guts, teeth, hair and eyeballs?

Don't be a statistic, or the guy who destroys his house while the bad guy runs out the front door. On the other hand, if you truly need a breeching device, buy an extra barrell. Its cheaper.

Thanks for the response. First let me assure you I never have nor will I ever buy a gun to look cool. I have several guns and just wanted a home defense shotgun. My Mossberg is used to skeet shoot and is much longer than the new one. I simply saw the choke and thought it would be an interesting accessory to go along with the EOTech forend with light my wife bought me. Also I had a guy try to break into my home a year ago and my mossberg is the only thing that stoped him from getting to my wife and son! I am always aware of my surroundings and an prepared to handle the situation. One thing you did mention about the price of crime scene clean up I wanted to comment on though. If another person comes into my home and causes the upset that the last guy did, they will be leaving in a bag as opposed to a cop car!

Outstanding reply, chiroman. I very likely sounded a little chippy with my post, and I'm glad to see your answer is straight up. Lots of folks get a little cranky, but you are a gentleman! Its obvious you are prepared, and that EOTech device may save a life of a loved one stumbling in from a rough night at the local tavern. I know this because one of my sons, in his errant youth, found himself staring down the barrel of a home defense shotgun. His good luck that I used a light, and waited to be certain of the threat. Mine too, I suppose.

Oh, when I mentioned the cost of cleanup, I understand that the cops, or the ME, or the coroner will put the dirtbag inside a body bag, until they finally get the perp bagged and tagged, he's going to leak like a sieve. I, just like you, am prepared for the cleanup costs, as human remains may cost a couch or a chair, too. I'm a little hesitant to call my insurance agent and ask "what if....", and I'm hopeful that they'll treat it as any other catastrophic loss. Its not specifically addressed in my policy, so if I'm out 5 grand or so for cleanup, its lots easier than having the cops explain to my grandkids whey "Pappy" went to heaven.

I am 100% in your camp. If one breaks into my home, they will go out in a body bag. No warnings shouted, no warning shots, no nothing except several rounds of 12 gauge BB slamming into the perps chest, or whatever body part he presents. I'm likely going to start a conversation here about BB vs. 00 buckshot, but I use magnum goose loads with steel shot. That's about 90 .177 pellets that deliver sever crush injuries, and open considerable wound channels. Steel, in my home where a 10 foot shot is a long one, doesn't lose enough punch, or open up enough pattern wise, to be a poor choice over lead.
