Shot Spotter

How do you guys feel about this gun shot surveillance system? Many cities pay 60,000 dollars a year per square mile for this. I have mixed feelings on it but Im leaning more towards thinking its unnecessary government surveillance and a waste of tax dollars. But Im not quite sure about it.

I read about this earlier and I kinda think it's a bit like big brother watching. But at the same time it does have practical purpose in areas that have a lot of driveby shootings.

We have had it in Charleston for a number of years. They talked about it a lot when they first got it. We don't hear about it all anymore.

What we do hear though, is police came upon a gunshot victim laying in the street or in the yard or on the corner of such and such address.

We don't hear they were called to the scene, just that they arrived at the scene. Guess why?

Down here the Broward Sheriff's Office used it on a trial basis for a year. They've decided not to keep it. Lots of false alarms and time wasted rushing to locations only to find that it wasn't a gunshot that triggered the system.

If the bugs are worked out; if there is a demonstrated need (ie high gun crime rate); and if the jurisdiction has the budget for it...then I wouldn't have any objections to this.

My reasoning: If a gun is fired in a populated area, one of two things is happening. A crime is being committed by a criminal with a gun. Or a lawfully armed citizen is defending himself with a gun. In either case, police response is warranted. This system seems like it could significantly reduce response time, accurately directing authorities to the correct area.

My one reservation: Could the sophisticated acoustic listening technology be modified to illegally eavesdrop on conversations? If so...that gets into some serious big brother territory.

Charleston proper is a pretty small area. I think it is only on the peninsula where it is set up. It's probably easier to have someone on the spot within a minute or two, maybe 5 if it's donut time.

Also, I'm pretty sure this is a version of the same type the military uses for sniper action. It triangulates the shot. I don't think it is sensitive enough to pick up voices though from the way it is described, however, maybe it is just a ruse for something more sinister.

Thanks for suggesting that Mr. Gain, as if I didn't worry about that kind of stuff enough already. :):)

Unless the police response time is any better than the usual 10-20 minutes, which I seriously doubt but have no statistics to reference, I would consider this yet another monumental waste of tax payer money, and a huge government intrusion. The conspiracy theory part of my brain is tingling. Anyone see Minority Report? Person of Interest?

It does make one wonder what other types of surveillance they will add on or tie into the system!

With most of the cities cash strapped it appears to be a "Nice to have rather than a Need to have"

Oh wait. What was I thinking...They have all the money they ever need...They just take it from us!

I'm thinking the tech ended to pick up speech as opposed to a gun shot would be a lot more expensive. All the shot spotter needs to be looking for is a rapid spike in a Hugh decibel range.

The television series PERSON OF INTEREST, CBS, Thursdays at 9:00PM comes to mind with what is being discussed here. Who's to say it isn't already modified to snoop on people's private conversations?

What exactly is the Hugh decibel range?

It's amazing cash straped cities can afford this system. Most are cutting public safety employees to save money. With the restritive gun laws in most large cities no one is aloud to own guns anyway. Why would there be a need.

Because when you're not allowed to own gun's, the BG's will still have them and they will be using them. And yes, I know I am just stating the obvious.

If they put a system like this in Detroit I think it would explode from overwork. D.C as well.

I think they have 2 of them in Saginaw. I am a few miles away and shoot in my yard all the time.No police have ever showed up here for it. I dont think they work for for a wide area, just about a mile or so.imho I think it is way over priced for what it is supposed to do.
