Separate Gun and Ammo Safes?

Hi Guys.

If you have read some of my previous posts, I mentioned that I write for a company that sells gun safes. There is a school of thought out there that states one should have two separate safes--one for firearms, and one for ammo.

Anyone out there for or against this? Why or why not? I'm planning to do a blog post or short article that discusses this, and would appreciate opinions and ideas.

Thanks!

P.S. It should go without saying, but this is a good time to state that my opinions on this forum are exclusively my own and do not represent my employer.

I keep ammo locked in a separate safe from my guns. It started as a habit to ensure kids wouldn't be able to get into both should the gun safe be left open. I still do this even though the kids are gone.

I work with a guy that kept his ammo and guns in the same safe. His house caught fire and the heat discharged all his ammo un the safe destroying everything else in the safe. Just something to keep in mind

I always thought the point was to have so much amunition and so many guns they didn't fit in one safe

I only have the one safe and it's the Cannon American Eagle. I store both ammunition and guns. But I now have the need for another safe as I am outgrowing the current one.

Saw some nice Liberty models at the recent Gun Show.

If it were not the outgrow issue, I see no problem keeping both ammo and guns in one safe.

I store my guns in a safe and my ammunition in a less expensive sheet metal lock box. I am nervous about putting too much powder in too confined a space, at least a lock box is not sealed and has a chance at venting properly should something happen.

For the cost of a good gun safe you can buy a vault door. THEN you will have pleanty of room.

Like BC1, I keep them seperate so if 1 is compromised the house/kids/grandkids cannot discharge the weapons.

I keep mine separate. This is a space issue and safes are expensive. So, given the choice, I place my guns in the good safe and my ammo in a metal locked box. Go ahead, see if you can carry it away! LOL. I do keep some spare pistol rounds next to my handgun safe. (One box.) My kids are older and I don't have any kids running around the house.

My guns are in the safes, my ammo is mostly in USGI ammo cans and sealed battle packs stacked next the safes.

If a safe maker wants to offer me a buy-one-get-one deal then I'll gladly have one for each. Until then my ammo gets stacked outside the safe.

It makes sense. If you have a fire and it cooks off your ammo it'll damage your guns that may otherwise possibly have made it. Having the ammo in a safe makes sense, too, because the last thing you'd want is to kill your whole local fire department with your ammo going off in the closet. You might be disliked after that.

I keep my guns in the safe, and the amo Locked in amo cans, Amo cans hidden well.. the reason is if a BG gets in and manages to open the safe, he can't shoot me with my own guns...

I keep the most used guns and some ammo for them in the safe.

The rest of both are in another secure area in footlockers and ammo cans.

I have a double wide safe with over 90 firearms of ammo, rifles, shotguns, pistols and revolvers, although that is why I purchased it 12 years ago. The only problem it is stored at my uncle's house 30 miles from where I live as I was transferring my firearms from kalifornia to Arizona.

I do not have a safe at my house, but I do have firearms within reach of where I'm at, and being retired living in a gated retirement community and being home all the time I keep my ammo and firearms close to me for easy access. I will most likely buy a finger safe or two for my firearms and ammo. Although for the past 12 years I never felt the need for one. When I do leave, my firearms usually go with me as this is a concern of mine with the cartels, gangs and crazies running around today. I have a more concern for my Beagle being at the house as he will lick you to death, I will just shoot you. Forget the Dog, Beware of Owner.
