LUGAR’S LEGACY OF GUN CONTROL - 20 YEARS OF KEY ANTI-GUN VOTES
• VOTED FOR THE BRADY BILL - 11/20/93 - HR 1025 - Brady Handgun Bill - Established the requirement for NICS - National Background Checks. Created a bureaucracy which has failed to keep criminals from obtaining guns and has placed a massive burden on lawful gun owners & taxpayers. Did you know that Lugar’s Press Secretary, Mark Helmke, is virally anti-gun just like his brother, Paul Helmke, the former President of the Brady Campaign?
• VOTED FOR THE CLINTON GUN BAN - 9/13/94 - SB 1805 - Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act - Banned the manufacture, sale, or possession of almost 200 semi-automatic firearms with arbitrary characteristics such as pistol grips. Of those characteristics, none made the firearm more lethal than your average hunting rifle. It also banned the sale or possession of magazines that contain more than ten rounds of ammunition.
1/14/11 – Lugar was interviewed on Bloomberg Television in which he was asked about the 1994 “Assault Weapons Ban” which expired in 2004. "I believe it should be (reinstated), but I recognize the fact that the politics domestically in our country with regard to this are on a different track altogether."
• VOTED TO EFFECTIVELY END GUN SHOWS - 5/20/99 - SA 362 - Gun Show Sale Regulation Amendment - Draconian requirements in this legislation would have effectively shut down all gun shows. It would have ended all private sales between individuals without background checks.
• VOTED AGAINST THE RIGHTS OF D.C. CITIZENS TO OWN FIREARMS - 2/26/09 - D.C. Gun Laws - SB 160, Roll Call 72 - Voted to continue to restrict the District of Columbia’s ban on firearms ownership.
• VOTED AGAINST CONCEALED CARRY RECIPROCITY - 7/22/09 - SA 1618 Authorizing Concealed Firearms Across State Lines - Lugar cast the deciding vote against requiring states to recognize the carry licenses of other states. This would have been similar to how driver’s licenses are recognized in all 50 states.
• VOTED TO CONFIRM ANTI-GUN ATTORNEY GENERAL - voted to confirm Eric Holder for the post of Attorney General. Under Eric Holder, the Justice Department allowed the BATFE to conduct Operation Fast & Furious. This allowed known criminals to bypass the NICS check and unlawfully buy firearms that were taken into Mexico. Those guns have been linked to hundreds of crimes including the death of U.S. Border Patrol Agent, Brian Terry. Furthermore, Holder has clearly advocated near universal licensing and registration, and he filed an amicus brief in the District of Columbia vs. Heller case, arguing that the 2nd Amendment was NOT an individual right.
• VOTED TO CONFIRM ANTI-GUN SUPREME COURT JUSTICES - voted to confirm three of the four most anti-gun Justices on the Supreme Court: Ginsberg, Sotomayer, and Kagan.
