Selling firearm - is there an ownership release form?

About 10 years or so ago when I lived in Oregon, I sold a car to someone who subsequently committed theft against the local grocery store. Apparently, the guys wife/accomplice was involved. Her description apparently matched my wife's enough that cops came over and questioned her. What had happened is that after we sold the car, they never registered it in their name, so the DMV still thought we owned it. The cops suggested that in the future we go to the DMV website and flag our vehicle as having been sold, so that we're not relying on the buyers to transfer ownership.

I now live in Arizona. Is there any way to do the same after a private party sale of a firearm? The BATF form 4473 only appears to be applicable to FFL's. A bill of sale helps if the cops come knocking, but aside from doing the transfer through an FFL, is there some other way to release ownership in an official sense?

Draft up the bill of sale for the firearm, your name, address, SN of the firearm, buyers information. Then go to your local bank/ city hall and have yourself and buyer sign the form in front of the notary of the public. He or she will then sign, date and stamp their seal on the paper work. Making it a legal document.

good advice - I don't always do the notary but do the ATF form without calling in - put that will bill of sale, copy of id and permit to purchase (in MN we still have that) or permit and keep on file. Have not sold a lot of guns privately but enough to need to stay out of trouble. If the libs get their way though all this might change and somehow or some way we either won't be able to private sell or have to get permit before selling or maybe take it to the police and have them give their blessing - any way you look at it we will probably have things get worse.
